The record attendance of players and visitors at the courts of the Levin Tennis Club on Saturday—when the season officially opened—testifies to the growing popularity of the game in Levin, and that the action of the committee in constructing a new court was quite justified. Quite a hundred people, including the Mayor and Mayoress (Mr ; ,nd Mrs T. Hobson) were present to hear-the opening remarks of the Club President (Dr. Thompson). The President extended a welcome to both visitors and members. The Club had experienced a fairly strenuous year, but it was easy to* see the fruits o their efforts, and it could safely be said that the Levin Tennis Club held its own with any of the other ing bodies. Last year they had been successful iu winning all but two of their matches with outside dubs, tothis year they hoped to win all of them. (Laughter). Much work had been done in connection with the top-dressing o old courts and the construction of the new, especial thanks being due to Mr Dawson for his work therein. (Applause). The club flag was raised, and tne courts were then open for another sea-
sou. ~ The Mayor, in congratulating the
players on their past successes and the need for upholding the club’s reputation, urged the committee, as well as the players, not to forget the younger and less-experienced players, to whom the Club would have to look in the future, and to whom every encouragement should be given—a strong point and one that should not be overlooked. The speaker said he regretted that the club’s premises had been broken into, but did not think there would be a recurrence this season. He wished the Club all success during the coming year. The president’s wife (Mrs Thompson! then presented the trophies and medals won during the past season, and following the presentation an adjournment was made to the pavilion, from which afternoon tea was served.
