BOWLING NOTES.

A writer on bowls says:—lt is a I game that can he adapted to circum- j, stances, and played with equal enjoyment by two persons or two teams, providing a test of skill and judgment - which yet is not a perpetual trial of temper. It is a cheerful and friendly sport; in which the players, however keen and skilful, can yet indulge in laughter and conversation. It is played as a game, and not as a trail by combat. There is none of that tense anxiety which makes' a whisper on the putting-green as devastated as a sneeze in an operating theatre. But though there is no life or death seriousness on the faces of the merry manipulators of these shining, biased balls, there is no i lack of interest and enthusiasm. Aj good game is as exciting as a horse race j but not so chancy. Note the care andj Judgment with which the ball is "do-! livered," and the hopeful eagerness with which the eye tracks its course, even when the. player does not, as is

usual, follow it up with encouraging, coaxing, shepherding gestures. It may be of interest to bowlers who usually participate in the Christmas centre tournament to know that Christmas Day occurs this year on a Saturday, which makes it imperative to observe Boxing Day on Monday, December 27, which will give a clear week s run for the tournament. There is every prospect of a team of bowlers coming to New Zealand this season from Queensland, not to play the Dominion tournament (which offers much too strenuous a programme for Queenslanders), but simply to tom’ the Dominion for about four or live weeks, During the past winter Brisbane was visited by several ‘Wellington bowlers, including Messrs M. Marks, W. Mack, J. and G. Redmond, who urged the Brisbane players to get a team together for a tour to New Zealand. It is possible that some players from New South 'Wales may come across for the big tournament in Auckland.
