THEFT FROM GOODS SHED.
SENT TO BORSTAL INSTITUTE. Appearing on remand before Mr R. M. Watson, S.M., at the Magistrate’s Court at Palmerston North yesterday morning, Vincent George Byan Wallace, a Maori half-caste, 16 years of age, Avas charged that, on October 5, at Shannon, he did steal sundry goods of a total A’alue of £7 17s 7d, the property of the Nbav Zealand Government. Accused elected to be dealt with summarily and pleaded guilty. Senior-Sergeant O’Grady stated that, as the result of three convictions for theft, accused had been committed to Weraroa in August last year. Later, he had been licensed out to various places, but his conduct had been very unsatisfactory. On the night on Avhicli the present offence liad been commit ted, accused had obtained access to the railway goods shed at Shannon and had stolen the articles complained of. BetAveen midnight and one a.in. lie -had been discovered and arrested. Mr Lacey, probation officer, told the magistrate that accused had been licensed out from Weraroa on three occasions, each time having to be returned because of petty thieving. Sentence of not less than IS months •* detention in the Borstal Institute rvas passed, the magistrate commenting that this Avould give accused a chance of getting rid of what Avas apparently'a growing habit.
