BOWLING SEASON COMMENCES.

+ OPENING DAY YESTERDAY. If the attendance of local bowlers at the opening day of the Levin Bowling Club is a, forecast of the future, the 11927 season should be very successful. ; In addition to a large muster of Levin ( bowlers there were rinks from Palmerston North and Shannon, and the visitors' unsolicited praise of the local green must have fully recompensed the Green Committee for its labours of the past six weeks. One visitor was heard to remark that the Levin Green was comparable to any other in the North Island, and certainly the way in which the bowls ran according to bias is a tribute to the responsible parties, despite the off-setting action of heavy rain and, lastly, a heavy frost. Mr E. Derham, who this year is pre sident of the Levin Bcwjing Club, accorded a warm welcome to the visitors, both bowlers and ladies, but to the latter he expressed the club's sincere appreciation of the many ways in which the ladies associated with the club had been so truly, helpful. They were always welcome and there was always a cng> of afternoon tea—for which they had a weakness, it was said. (Laughter). He hojH'd, and believed, that visit in <y bowlers would have a pleasant af ternoon, as'the speaker had recollections cf enjoyable-:games on the greens of other clubs. He read a letter from Palmerston North, expressing the . hope that Mr M. J. 'Suhan, who won the champion singles twice in succession there, would again be a participant in this year's competitions (Hear,- Hear). Three cheers were, called for Mr Suhan, after which Miss Frances Pyke rolled the kitty and Mrs Derham made a most commendable shot with the first bowl. , Results of the various games were as under:— ? * Shannon (Shannon, Brami, Roach and Gunning) 21 v. Levin (Pink, Col. Beere, Bockett and Bull) 16. Levin (Edwards, Gayne, Sherwood and Percy) 18 v. Shannon (Anderson, Cronquest, Roe and Knowles) 14. Levin (Cameron, Gibson, Challies and Monk) 28 v. Levin (Parker, Connor, Routley and von Hartitzsch) 24. Levin (Clements, Kennedy, Hosie and Suhan) 20 v. Takaro, Palmerston North (Griggs, Frew, Bayliss and Morris) 15. Shannon (Mason, Waterston, Clayton and Spencer) 17 v. Levin (Morton, Kirk, Brown and Derham) 20.
