MANAWATU RIVER SUBSIDING.
BUT FOX TON EOAD BLOCKED.
Althounh the level of the Manawatu river is gradually becoming lower, the pent-up water on the Paiaka and Moutoa lands is now concentrating ou the Wirokino bridge area, with the consequence that the Levin-Foxton road is again Hooded and the Foxton mailman, Mr F. Rout, had to resort to the boat in order to traverse the two-mile stretch of water between the bridge and No. 2 line on the Foxton side. The passenger service between Foxton and Levin is being maintained in this way w]iich is a tribute to the tenacity of purpose with which Mr Rout tackles what invariably is a well-nigh hopeless situation. The railway service between Foxton and Pahncrston North is still intact, and the southward mails from Foxton are travelling to Wellington via Palmerston North. All the fences which divide the country surrounding the Wirokino bridge are completely covered by water, and the situation is not likely to be relieved until the government drain is able to cope with the volume of water. This means that road communication between Levin and Foxton is likely td remain broken for a number of days at least.
