REPLY TO MAYOR’S STATEMENT.
Strong exception was taken by members to the Mayor’s statement at the last Borough 'Council meeting in reference to the use of. the Council’s horses and dray at the .Domain on Sunday, September 26th. Mr Curran said lie was responsible for the horses and dray being used, he having sent for them as the outcome of. a conversation he had had willi the Mayor when, the pavilion was being shifted, at which time he had, told the Mayor what work the Club were doing and intended to do. The Mayor had promised then that if the Club helped to break up the concrete, at the pavilion tlie Council would assist the Club in every way in its power. He thought the state- , rnent was quite uncalled for, particularly the * manner in which it was put. The horses and dray had been used I before previous meetings and also the previous week and prior to \ his conversatioip it was generally understood the Club could have use of them and he was at a loss to understand why exception was taken on this' particular 'occasion. , Some of those present expressed the opinion that some of the Council appeared to be out to block the only • body that was attempting to carry out improvements to the Domain:.
After further discussion it was resolved to write to the Town Clerk pointing nut, “That the Athletic Club was surprised and grieved to see the published -statement of the Mayor in, reference to the use of the Councils’ horses and drays in the Domain op Sunday, September 26th, when it was tacitly understood that the! Gouncil would assist th© Athletic Club in any mariner within its power. This assistance was assured by the Mayor when in conversation with Mr Jas Curran, one of: the Club's! "executive officers.” WORK AT DOMAIN. Mr Curran said a lot of work required to O', done, preparing me track at the ..Domain.
