BABIES THROWN FROM BLAZING CAR
Women threw their babies from a blazing motor-coach into the arms of helpers near Brighton before they themselves attempted to reach safety. The coach was one of a fleet that had taken a party of women connected with the Bromley (Kent) infant welfare centres for a day's outing to the seaside, and the return journey had begun when flames shot out from the engine of the coach. The driver tried to put out the fire with his coat, but the flames spread and scorched the cover\of the char-a-banc, giving" rise to large volumes of smoke before the fire was mastered with the aid of extinguishers from the other char-a-bancs. There were exciting scenes as the women made a dash for the exit. . The hood of the coach was up, and it was difficult to get out. One woman sprained her ankle.
