MONTE CARLO?
GREAT SCHEME FOR. HOBART. PAYING STATE DEBTS. Hobart another Monte Carlo? This is being seriously discussed in Tasmania. A prominent Hobart business man, whose identity has not been divulged, has made the suggestion as ■ one way of raising sufficient revenue to get Tasmania out of her financial trouble. His idea, as expressed in letters to the newspapers, is that Tasmania could be made the Riviera of Australia by the Government granting a license to .establish a State-controlled casino at Brown's River or at some othpr suitable site. The scheme is an ambitious one, as the license, would carry the establishment of luxurious hotels, opera house, theatres, and all the etceteras of Monaco. The business man responsible for the idea believes that the wealthyresidents of the Southern Hemisphere would flock to such a place, and that 95 per cent, of thos-j- who patronise the Casino would be Britishers, and, therefore, the Monte Carlo of Australia, would not be subject to the vagaries of the neurotic types from European and other countries.
