PUZZLING POLICE OF TWO COUNTIES.
A queer mystery of the sort that would have intrigued Sherlock Holmes is puzzling- the police of Essex and Cambridgeshire. The problem is this: Why have two complete sets of silk underwear, bhoes, and stockings been hidden in East Anglian lanes, 35 miles from one another, within the last month? When a'farm labourer working in a field at Little Totham, Essex, last month, found an almost new set of women's underclothing juSl inside a hedge by the road the Essex police made g searching investigation of the affair, but without success.
The discovery was more or less forgotten until the other day when a
.similar set of clothing was found hidden in a hedge on another lonely road near Moldreth, near Cambridge Four theories have been suggested: (1) That the clothe:; were removed by persons before committing suicide; (2) That they were removed from .somebody who was the victim of foul play; (3) That the, had been hidden for a hoax; (4) Thiit they ho a been left in the hedges by somebody who was anxious ro dispose of them. None of these theories, however, is well supported by facts. No body of a suicide has been discovered In the neighbourhoods and no woman likely to have worn such clothing is known to be missing. It is extremely unlikely that the articles were hidden for a practical joke.
