MODERNISING BATTLESHIPS
Drastic changes will be made both m the efficiency and the appearance of the six older United States battleships if the bill providing for their modernisation is passed by Congress. The greatest alterations will be made in the Texas and New York, completed in 1914. New Are-control systems will entail the removal of the present basket pattern foremasts, and the erection of tripod masts to provide greater stability for the delicate instruments. Conversion from coal to oil fuel will include the provision of n<sw boilers. As in certain British ships after Jutland, additional deck plating \vjll bo fitted. The hulls under water will be blistered against sumbarine explosion. Perhaps most interesting of all will be thi? provision of aeroplanes. A power impulse aircraft catapult will be installed, on No. 3 turret in each ship. This arrangement and the .consequent changes are necessitated by the fact that there is no room astern for the catapult, as in more modern battleships.
