LEVIN club donates cup.
The Wanderers having won the Isherwood Shield outright, the Levin Club has donated a cup to replace the shield as the Senior Rugby trophy in Horowhenua. At the Management Committee meeting of the Union last night, the secretary (Mr J. Casey) reported that the Club had offered such a cuip for competition in the senior grade. The chairman (Mr.J. J. O'Connor) voiced the Committee’s sincere appreciation of the offer. It was the first time that such a body had come forward and offered to present a trophy, and it showed that the public were fully appreciative of the Committee’s efforts to foster football. The speaker said he was proud to. be in the position of chairriian and to re-ceive-such an offer. ; Mr F. Robinson said he had much pleasure in seconding the remarks of Mr O’Connor. He was pleased to know that the people of Levin were carrying on the good reputation they already had iii the way of donating football trophies. The public were good sports and doing -their level best to- help in improving the game —the Committee would stand by them.
Mr Rinimer spoke in support of ivhat had previously been said. Knowing the personnel of the Levin Club, lie was perfectly satisfied that though not directly associated with football, yet the members were keenly interested and only too ready to give a helping hand. The Mayor missed very few of the matches and not one man in the Club was lacking in interest.
'Messrs Casey and McDonald amplifield the previous statements, Mr McDonald saying that the presentation of such a cup was a compliment to the Union and a spur to assist it in carrying on. (Hear, hear). The secretary was instructed to write ‘ and thank the Levin Club for its. sporting offer. DANNEVIRKE’S DEFECTION.
Dannevirke’s failure to play Horowhenua for the Bebbington Shield on Saturday last.»was sharply commented upon. Mr Winiata said that recently he was in conversation with a gentleman intimately - connected with football matters in the Hawlces Bay district, and he had'assured tiie speaker that so far .from seven of Dannevirke’s men being injured, Craven and Jensen were the only two players out of action. All the others were playing on the Wednesday prior to the match. Mr Winiata considered the Horowhenua Union should “stir up” Dannevirke, who seemed to be suffering from “cold feet.” At least, that was the assertion of this gentleman from Hawkes Bay. Mr Casey: This has opened up a big question, for it seems that if a team arranges to play a match on a certain date, but finds it lias no chancd, it can turn the fixture down at the last moment. We will have to stop this early. It was resolved to ask the' Danne-
virke Union for a refund of expenses - incurred in arranging the match and advertising expenses, etc. , . THE WINNING TEAMS.
Wanderers were declared winners of the Senior competition, and Weraroa the champions of the junior grade. Both, said Mr J. J. O 1 ’ Connor, deserved every congratulation, as did their r.unners-up. In. referring to the . County-Wanderers game on Saturday he said that not one moment during the game was'lacking in. interest. County were deserving of much congratulation for the sporting game they played. It was one of the cleanest, and keenest, games, seen this year. Mr M. Winiata concurred with the chairman. As a young team and a new club County merited all praise for their fight against an old club and an old combination. In considering the very bad state of the ground he would say the game was one of the best he liad seen under those conditions. The Springbok match in Palmerston North had not been a patch - on Saturday’s game. Mr Anderson congratulated Wan : derere upon their win, which had been absolutely fair and square. Messrs Robinson and Caisey also joined with the previous speakers in their remarks commendation, the latter saying that an outstanding feature was the keenness displayed prior to the match. Each team had full practises during the week, showing the public that players were desirous .of raising the standard of play and giving every encouragement for the public to maintain its interest' in football.
