SHANNON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
FORTNIGHTLY MEETING. The above meeting was held dm the Council Chambers on Tuesday evening. Present: The Mayor (Mr E. Butt) and Ons. Curran, Thwaites, Watkins,, Spencer, Richardson, Hook and Downes. CORRESPONDENCE. From S. S. Richards in regard to lease of right-of-day at of . Grand Street, held by Council, (pointing out that the lease has expired and the writer would like to hear from the Council about same.—Decided to renew the lease for a further twelve months. A. E. Hyde wrote • stating that the culvert under the road at the south end of Thompson Street is much too high, and it is impossible to. drain ' the land owned by Mrs , Hyde and Mr Richardson. He requested that the culvert be lowered. —Left to Road Committee to deal with. From Clerk of Horowhenua County Council, acknowledging receipt of letter from the Council. in reference to the bridge over the Otauru stream, advising that this matter will come before his Council at its meeting on September 11th. The postmaster (Mr H. C. Jones) wrote drawing the Council’s attention to the hitching post in front ~of the post office. The writer stated that as far as he could judge it had outlived its usefulness, and could be dismantled. At the present time-it is made use of by the youth of Shannon as a seat and leaning post on Sunday mornings, and by their loud voices and lurid language -they made themselves not only a nuisance to the public, but also to his family, who lived on the premises.—'The Council expressed the opinion that the hitching post was a necessity.—<lt was decided to forward the letter to the police department. From Assistant Under-Secretary, stating that the Postal Department had advised him that they were •. agreeable to 1 give the Council temporary access over portion of the post office site until such time as it waS required by the Department.—Received.
From Mr F. Bryant stating there ; were a lot of tins floating around his ■ banks and paddocks. He asked that l they be gathered and flattened and 1 carted to the rubbish dump. He also 1 requested that the dump be fenced as ' it was dangerous to stock. He took exception to dump being removed to near turn of his cottages and would rather the Council fenced the site securely and carry on as before.—lt was resolved that the tins be collected and dumped as requested, and that the matter re site of new dump ' he referred to the Health . Officer for his opinion in writing. Prom .St. Joseph’s Church asking for permission to hold a street stall on September 11th. —'Granted. , ROADMAN’S REPORT. The roadman, F. Hiley, reported that they'had carted 864 yards of metal on to Primmer- Terrace, Margaret Street, Nathan Terrace, Gi;ey and Stansell Streets and the Mam North Road. Have metalled the footpath in Grey Street from the Albion Hotel to Mrs Butler’s gate. In’ the Domain pipes have been put under the cycle track and a new turn stile lias been erected. Rubbish has been collected during the month It has been buried in a blind creek m the Council’s paddock. The bridge m Graham Street over Stansell’s dram has been taken out and the stays are now ready for the cable.. This work will have to wait for five or six. days to allow the concrete to set. inspected the head of the waterworks on three occasions to get the water into the galleries. Have cleaned ~5 chains of watertables and eight chains of drains.—Received., , general. Mr M. Christenson was appointed P rSTto Cr. Downes, the Mayor state! that no report . on ttl f^ a^ r ; works had been received from Mr Edwards, the engineer, aithough he had made an inspection. The Town Clerk stated that the Engineer had not been able to give bis report.in time ' for the meeting, as his time had be taken up in connection with the River Board Commission.
