GOLD IN A HEDGE

HIDDEN HOARD FOUND BY SCHOOLBOYS. Gold coins that have lain beside the highway 30 years have been found by schoolboys at Dry Drayton near Cambridge, the yield of a systematic search having been 13 sovereigns, seven half sovereigns, six five-shilling pieces, one four-shilling piece, four half-crowns, six shillings and two sixpences. The search began as the result of the rolling into the hedge of a ball by Arthur Goodfield as ho was on his way to cchool. He saw two coins in the soil. ‘Not knowing what they were he took them to his teacher, who told him they were 5/ pieces. After school, with four companions he returned to the spot and in a hole beneath a tree they found bright yellow coins which their teacher told them were sovereigns and halfsovereigns.

Later the whole of the boys of the school made 4 a thorough search. The total amount of the treasure trove, which is thought to be the proceeds of, a burglary commited in the neighbourhood 30 years ago, is nearly £2O. The latest date on the coins'is 1593. Tola l,i aau
