FOOTBALL NOTES.
Tile senior game Shannon-County on Saturday fell a long' way short of first class football. It was confined mainly to the forwards, hut nevertheless, interest was maintained throughout. On taking the field it was noticed
'.Shannon jteam {had undergone a change and had re-organised their positions'. This appeared to be the local team’s undoing. This is not the first time Shannon has chapped its team around when there was a chance of winning the championship in the concluding round. Perhaps Saturday’s experience will be a lesson which they will take 'heed of on future occasions. The mistake was made of bringing Williams in at the eleventh hour, -this being his first game this season, and he was not a fit man.
The Shannon three quarter line, which consists of Richerts, Hunt and Whyte, who are a good trio, did not get an opportunity to get going, the five eighths (Williams and Wall) failing to open up the game. When the half, Spring, sent the ball out they were too slow getting it' away.
Roberts, when he did get an qpportunity, did not play up to his usual standard, this being no doubt brought about by the new combination.
Hunt (three-quarter) and Boy-es at full back, were the sheet anchors in the back division, both these players showing up well on the defence. Whyte, on the wing, did not get sol much work as Roberts, but what came his way was done well. In the forwards, Moynihan, Hendricksen and K. Dalzeil were the outstanding players. Maihi, who is a member of the Combined, team, and is usually particularly fast in the loose, appeared to be taking'no- risks. No doubt in view of the Taranaki tour.
The County team had the best •> of the game t-hroughomt and were no doubt unlucky in not putting up a bigger score. One sure try they lost was when Tuna struck the goal post. This team did not show any combination, but they never let up at any part of the game and Showed they were very fit. Mr McDonald and Ran-sfield rendered great assistance in the hack division, botth these players handling the ball’ in great style. , On the day, County backs excelled those of the home teams rear division, their handling of the ball and tackling being very sound, but they lacked scoring ability. The County forwards were a very fit lot, and it would be hard to individualise. Special mention must be made of the clever try scored by Dunn who dribbled the ball, from nearly half way, .beating the opposing backs. Throughout the gatme this player was very conspicuous m the loose. Of the others Tuna,-Mc-Kinnon and Stewart were the mos prominent.
