A sliag made an unwelcome visit to the pond in Queen’s Gardens, Nelson On its arrival a paradise duck made an attack on the shag, and after u fierce battle lasting about 20 minutes, in which the visitors Lad a leg and wing broken, the paradise duck came out victorious. The shag had eventually to be killed. After having been closed to traffic since July 26th, the road between Levin and Foxton is again open, al.though there is still a fair depth of water in tile lowemportioiib of it. Of all tile areas affected by the recent flood, this part was longest under ? water, and for weeks passengers had to be carried by boats over a considerable distance. Cars succesfuily traversed the flooded parts during flit past couple of days. Cigarettepaperg (“tissues”) are at a premium in Oamaru just now and some who prefer’ to roll their own cigarettes have been compelled ito buy “made ups.” Others have taken the soothing pipe, while a few' have cut smoking out altogether, or until a further supply of their favourite brand of “tissue” is available. The inflation of the franc, a tobacconist said, had resulted in the French factories closing down and consequently the supplies were cut off. On top of this the boat carrying a number of cases of cigarette papers had gone down with t.iie result that the warehouses found themselves unable to meet the demand for these little flimsies.
