DOMAIN ORATOR’S RISE
SALARL OF £ISOO A YEAR. NEW SOUTH WALES POLITICS.. SYDNEY. Aug. 4. That a politician, without apparent reason, should surrender voluntarily his well paid and comfortable Parliamentary job, along with, its perquisites, naturally staggers the public. That is why the public was shocked when it learnt of the resignation of Mr. A. D. Kay, one of Sydney’s most notable Domain orators, notable especially for his denunciation of Communism and all its works, and an independent member of the Legislative Assembly, with however, an obvious leaning for the Government. But it was nothing to l the shock that the public got when it learnt next day that he had resigned in acceptance of an offer by the Government of the position of a member of the Meat Board, and that he was merely exchanging an insecure Parliamentary seat at £875 a year, with another 20 months to run, for a £ISOO a year job with a five years’ tenure. Incidentally, the Government’s position will now be strengthened in the House, for, under that satire upon representative Government, the Casual Vacancies Act, the vacancy will /be filled by a Government supporter, although authorities declare-that he is not entitled to the seat. The Premier, Mr. Lang, professes not to be disturbed by the storm which Mr. Kay’s appointment has brought about him. The public is wondering what shock the Labour Government will give it next.
