NEW ZEALAND POTATOES.

* ATTEMPT TO BAR FROM AUSTRALIA. (Received This Day, 11.45 a.m.) MELBOURNE, August 5. v The Tariff Board heard evidence in support of the application for an increased duty on imported potatoes from £1 to £4 a ton. The Board called for evidence against the application, but none was forthcoming. A deputation representing the potato growers of Victoria; South Australia, and Tasmania waited on the Minister of Health, Sir Neville Howse, and reference was made to a consignment of 25 tons of potatoes from New Zealand which were recently rejected on inspection in Melbourne and returned to New Zealand as infected with the disease known as “Corky Scab.” It was stated the growers were apprehensive lest the disease should be introduced into Australia. The Minister replied he would enquire into the whole question in consultation with the State authorities and make every effort to ensure that this disease should not be introduced into Australia.
