OPOSSUM TRAPPING.
FAIR RETURNS ONLY. To date the results secured by opossum trappers this year are not indicative of a promising return, although the more experienced men are doing well. Inexpert and other trappers crowded out through failure to make early application' for licenses are likely to suffer a lean period, and while some will make wages others will,,barely cover their expenses. The most productive region in the Wellington district this season is' that of the waterworks reserve at Palmerston North, an average “bag” of from 30 to 40 skins per day being taken from parties operating there. Wairongomai and Western Wairarapa Lake areas are showing good results, but not approaching those of last year when two parties netted £631 and £SBO respectively. To date about 400 licenses to trap opossums hace been issued to the Wellington area, as well as 100 permits granted to. bona fide occupiers of land on which these animals may be found.
