NEW ZEALAND ARTISTS
LONDON, June 15. Her Majesty the Queen, attended by Lady Mary Trefusis, honoured the Graham Gallery, 72 New Bond street, with a visit a few days ago, and purchased pictures by Alice Wilkinson, Helen Sengel and .C’ranleigh Barton, the New Zealand artist. Mr Barton was present when the Queen’s ' arrival was made Known, and her Majesty chatted with the New Zealander for about a quarter of an hour. She showed great interest in his water-colours, especially in the Neiv Zealand ones, which she was good enough to say were charming. In proof of her appreciation Queen Mary purchased two canvasses, one called “Sunlight and Shadoiv,” a scene on the Wanganui River, and “Afternoon Glow,” showing a view of Sydney. The artist was very much struck with the interest taken by the Queen in regard to the New Zealand scenes depicted, and the comments which she made, revealing the tact that the Royal visitor possessed a very vivid recollection ol her visit to the Dominion • many years ago. Lord and Lady Jellicoo were at the galleries the next day.
New Zealand Pictures in the Strand.
Mrs. Harvey, wife of Dr. Harvey (Napier), who is in England on a few months’ visit, sent to the New Zealand Government, for display in one of the windows, a good selection of scenes in New Zealand painted by herself during her eight years’ residence in the Dominion. The pictures are representative of many phases, but the majority are scenic and floral. The show is attracting attention. Mrs Harvey studied art in London before her marriage to Dr. Harvey, and she has exhibited at the Royal Institute of Painters in water colours and other London exhibitions. Now she is a member of the Wellington Academy and of the Napier Arts and Crafts (being on the committee of the latter body). One of the pictures shown, “Napier from the Hills,” was one of two which * were painted for an album that was presented by the . Navy League to Lord .Tellicoe on his rer*«ment as Governor-General of the Dominion, the other sketch being the one selected. Mrs Harvey is going shortly to Belgium, and, in September, she will return to Napier.
