CANADA AND THE UNITED STATES
Friendship between the Englishpeaking democracies is recognised as me of the corner stones of orderly irogress in the world. Canadas place n tne advance of this world movenent is surely unique, says the “Chrisr ian Science Monitor.” The Dominion >f Canada is virtually an independent lation, bound to Great Britain with .he lightest ties politically, but with strong bonds of kinship, affection and listoncai association. As the northern half of the North American continent, still very sparsely settled, with re- . sources capable of supporting a population equal to the present population of the United States, with no barriers but the mutable laws of an artificial boundary line, Canada’s economic destiny is largely linked up with the progress of the United States. While there is much in common between the economic interests of Canada and the United States, as there is between both countries and the United Kingdom, by no .means does it follow that Canada is destined to. be absorbed by the United States. Canada has much to contribute independently. as a virile young Western nation, to the building of an edifice of justice and unfolding freedom. The
continuous stream of British migrants to Canada is one governing factor in fiie development of Canadian nationhood.’ So long as the Dominion drafts generously on the British, motherland tor new citizens, Canada’s path toward greater nationhod would see'm to be based on co-operation with Other nations under the British flag, within the league of British nations. It is less generally appreciated that Canada has contributed much in the form, of good citizenship to the upbuilding to the'United States. Some, of America’s most respected citizens, statesmen and captains of industry have been of Canadian origin. Into this movement of good citizens between Canada and the United States, as well as between Canada and Great Britain must surely be woven enduring bonds of friendship, understand and brotherhood. It is Canada’s privilege to contribute much to this harmonious development of right relations between likeminded people. i
