THE WAITOMO CAVES
NEED FOR ACCOMMODATION. The need for greater enterprise on the part of the Tourist Department in exploiting the possibilities of the Waitomo Caves was stressed in the House of Representatives on Tuesday by Mr. J. C. Rolleston (Wai--tomo).
Many people were now being aZrracted there by the advertising that was being done, said Mr. Rolleston, but the accommodation was far from adequate in spite of the faeft that most of the buildings had been promised as far back as 1913. Other facta which should weigh with the authorities was that this was the only, one of all the' torist resorts that was paying, and that in 1924 the surplus revenue there had been £3500. The installation of electric light in the caves had brought about a wonderful improvement and the provision of camping grounds and cooking places for motorists also was a good move. He suggested that now a golf course should be laid out, so that people who were prepared to spend the weekends there or stay a little longer, would have some attraction in addi- " tion to the caves. He hoped (the Department would push on with the work of providing adequate hostel accommodation;
