“GOLD IN PENNIES”
A SILLY RUMOUR, CHANGING HANDS AT 8D EACH. Thousands of Londoners are being deceived by a tale which has gained a very wide circulation, that the 19 22 penny contains gold* Some people are buying these pennies at many times their face value. An omnibus conductor said to a reporter that 1922 pennies were being bought at his garage for 8d each. "The last one I had I sold for Sd,” he said. “L can get lOd for any more I may have. They are very rare.” An official of the Royal Mint exploded the myth. - There is nothing abnormal whatever in the 1922 penny (ho said). It is worth a penny and nothing more. There is no gold in it. ? In 1922 wc minted £52,000 worth o r ' pennies, about 9 times less than the average value of pennies minted m the previous few years. There was a great surplus of pence ait that time. We were asked' not to mint any more, and none has been minted since. The situation is becoming more normal and it is possible that pennies may again be minted in the near future.
We have ourselves received letters from pople regarding (the 1922 penny. Only this morning a letter came rrom a London woman asking if it was true that the. 1922 penny was worth Is 6d. We tell these correspondents that the 1922 penny is worlth just a penny.
