SHANNON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
FORTNIGHTLY MEETING. The above meeting was held in the iCouncil Chambers on Tuesday evening. Cr. Tinvuites was in chair, ins Worsn.p ihe Mayor having been culled to nevin owing to the serious illness oi his toother. There was also present Crs' Curran, Roberts, Downes, Watkins, Richardson, -Spencer, and Hook, CORRESI ’ONDENCE. Per mils were applied for by local residents for the erection of a 5-room-ed house aud two motor carsheds. — Referred to Building Committee. it was resolved that the registration fee for. the salevards be £1 Is. j ' GENERAL. [ Tlie Town Clerk reported the results of the loan proposals taken on Monday. Cr. Richardson reported that Messrs Hook and Sanderson had completed' the cleaning of Stansell’s drain aiid had made a first class job of the work. ROADS AND FOOTPATHS. Or. Spencer, in referring to tlie staite of the Borough roads recommended that light screened metal be placed on them. He said they were badly worrr-and the present way of dealing with them was ridiculous, which was largely caused by tlie unsatisfactory method of getting metal. Persons bad been invited to procure metal for borough supplies from the Otauru stream on Sundays, this being the only day oil which it could be taken from this spot, owing to tlie overflow of water from the Power H-Quse then being turned off, 'but so far no one had taken on the job. It was resolved that the Borough workmen be interviewed bv the Road , Committee with a view to getting them to do the work on Sundays, and they be offered 2s 3d per yard and the use of the. Borough teams. WORK FOR UNEMPLOYED I—FORMING 1 —FORMING FOOTPATHS. Cr. Spencer said that it had been brought under Ills notice that there was a certain amount of unemployment in the Borough. He said that there was a sum of £IOO on the esti- ' mates for the formation of footpaths. To relieve the position of the unemployed, lie recommended that they be put on’ to carry out this work. The time was now opportune for the work ■ to be done, and in a few weeks the paths could be treated with asphalt. In reply to Cr. Richardson, who asked what about repairing the present footpaths, Cr. Tlnvaitas said there was money in the- maintenance account which provided for that work. ! Councillors were .in accord with Cr. Spencer’s recommendation, it be-' , ing pointed out that- if the Council’s workmen are taken off to' do special work the general maintenance suffers. On the motion of Cr. Downes, seconded bv Cr. Richardson,' it was de- - ! elded that footpaths he formed land completed in Stout, Venn and Ballance Streets and that where present formation in the main streets lias been made the footpaths be 8 feet- wide and in the side streets 6 feet. Also, that the footpaths from Moynilian’s Corner to Vance street be given preference if further work is. to be carried out., - Cr. Downes said that now they intended to deal with the footpaths. They ought to go- into the question of purchasing a tar-boiler. He said £45 was allowed for one in the estimates. Cr. Spencer advocated purchasing a . sprayer and boiler which would cost approximately £75. Cr. Downes agreed, saying it would be foolishness on the port- of the Council to stick at a few pounds; as both the sprayer and boiler were necessary. It was decided to hold this matter over for a month or six weeks, and ' in the meantime tlie Town Clerk is to obtain quotations. GRASS TN DOMAIN. Cr. Richardson reported that it was impossible to cut the grass in die Domain and lie recommended that it be.fed off with sheep—lt was resolved that tlie Reserves Committee interview the representatives of the Shannon Football Club and ascertain if they are agreeable to it being fed off. * THANKS MOTION LOST. Cr. Richardson moved and Cr. Spencer seconded, “That the ratepayers who voted for the £7OO loan on Monday be thanked for the common- ! sense they used at tlie recent poll.” Cr. Curran took exception to themotion, which lie satd was most, unfair to those who voted against it. He asked why a motion was not • passed on the last occasion. Cir. Downes: There has been a certain amount of feeling over this matter and it should be let drop. The mover said he did not put the motion before them with any feeling. The Deputy Mayor (Cr. Thwaites): 1 have got to take the motion, but l think it should never have been brought forward. Cr. Roberts also expressed his disapproval. The DeputvAlayor then called for a show of hands: Crs. Spencer, Richardson and Watkins supported the motion: Crs. Roberts, Downes, Curran, Hook and the Chairman voting against it. The motion was lost and the Council then proceeded with other business.
