THE NEGLECTED NORTH.
• (To the Editor). Sir,—Or. Barber is to be congratulated for bis outspoken remarks hi connection with tlie handing over 01 the Shannon punt to the Manawatu County Council. The disastrous state of affairs at the Manawatu Bridge originated to some extent, through neglect, and the failure of the punt scheme has resulted in a huge loss of trade to the business people of Shannon, and incalculable inconvenience to tlie travelling public. Signs are not wanting, however, that the residents of shannon anu surrounding districts are being tired *f filling tlie, role of Cinderella so far as the needs of their district are concerned, and will expect and demand more attention in the future than has been the case in the past. Mb Barber’s frank statements that the northern end of the County was suffering from neglect, and that tlie Council was not trying to give satisfaction, will, I am convinced, receive hearty' endorsement, and no doubt prepare the way for a more satisfactory state of affairs. I am, etc.
