MODERN GIRLS DEFENDED
In his lecture the Institute of Hygiene on ‘‘The Prevention of Nervous Affections in (Children,” recently, Dr. J. S. Risien liussell, the neurologist, made some sleeping remarks about the modern iprl and the sort of life she leads strike us as being nonsense. i “Because a number of girls run wild and drink cocktails and go, night after night, td dance clubs it is perfectly preposterous to treat them as typical of the whole race of English girls,” says an exchange. So false an idea does a great ded,l of harm. It tends to make the girls'^who are living decent, normal lives feel that they are wasting their opportunities and losing much pleasure whiefch they might otherwise enjoy. Probaibly the entire number of girls who go \to night clubs is not equal to the feminine population of any considerable provincial town.. ( To stigmatise modern girls as a class on account of a foolish minority is thoroughly misleading can only do harm. England is full girls who follow a normal existence —work, play, sports, household dupes, and all sorts of various activities—and such girls are a pride to thieir parents and a pleasure to their friends. They are healthy in mind ancs body and have a very poor opinion /of the dope fiends and dance maniacs and cocktail girls. /
