We were in error in stating that the Shannon Co-operative Dairy Company would pay a bonus, of l£d per lb .on butetrfat to its suppliers on the 20th of tliis month. The bonus will not be paid until a later date. At Shannon on Tuesday our wellknown hand popular medico, Dr. J. G. Macleireth, was quietly married to Miss Iris Wily, of Pukekohe, the Rev. A. F. Stewart tying the nuptial knot. The happy couple will have the hearti|est (congratulations of the Whole community. Despite the miserable weather conditions last evening the Shannon Choral Society’s first concert of the season was well patronised. The concert was a most enjoyable one and the conductor and members are to be complimented on the excellence • of their performance. A full report will appear in our next issue. In regard to the dance to be field to raise funds for comforts for the patients in tlie Palmerston Hospital, it has been decided to hold the function on Friday, July 2:ird. To-morrow a street stall will be held for the same purpose and a large number of donations .have been' promised and the public will have a splendid opportunity to procure home made sweets, cakes, produce, etc. A reply has been received from ihe District Engineer of the Railway Department in respect to the petition recently forwarded asking that the third level crossing north of Shannon be regraded and widened. The Engineer stated that they expected to commence excavating shortly and when this is being done the spoil therefrom will he placed at the crossing and lie will have the road widened and the grade eased. With a view to properly lighting the railway yards to ensure safely while shunting during the night, the. Department are having three lights erected in different parts of the yard. One at the southern end is l now completed. It stands 38 feet high and throws a light along the lines extending to- the crossing and up to the goodshed, also giving a clear view of the points, which are situated underneath. The lights should prove most beneficial to the men engaged in shunting during the night. . At the meeting of the Horowhenua County Council on Saturday a letter was received from Messrs Treadwell and Sons, solicitors, Wellington claiming £SOO damages on behalf of Mr A. J. McArthur, whose car capsized by running over a hank on the road near Waikanae at Easter. The letter was considered in committee and the chairman was authorised to confer with the County Solicitor and take whatever other action was advisable, the Council admitting rio liability in respect to the matter. Levin seems to have felt the epidemic less than most towns. Only 5 per cent, of the scholars at the District High School are absent this week through colds and influenza. Another six per cent, are absent for other causes, some being sickness not connected with the seasonal complaints.
