FOOTBALL NOTES.

SATURDAY’S PLAY AND PLAYERS. The Shannon—Hui .Mai game was very strenuously played on Saturday and the spectators were kept in suspense till the call of time. It is generally considered the Shannon steam gave the visitors a big fight and the game was easily the best on,the local ground this season. Shannon .forwards showed some of their old-time dash and were too. good for the opposing backs and gave ©very evidence that they were in splendid fettle. ' ■ T t Owing to. ap injury to Meta jonnson Hui Mai’s full-back, lie changed places with Wallace at centre, the latter 1 going back. From the play a big improvement was noticed, Wallace’s taking of the ball and his line kicking often getting his side out- of difficulties. Bryant, the wing three-quarter, played a serviceable game and was a tower of strength in the back division. Tana, Gardner and McL'ean were a solid trio of forwards and continual--ly in the limelight, particularly the first named, who proved hnnself, m the writer's opinion, to. be the best forward on the ground. ‘ Boyes who played full back for Shannon, did not start too brilliantly, but as the game progressed, lie proved himself an adept in the position. His defence work was very solid. . Hunt, at centre, again showed that he is the sheet anchor of the Shannon backs, being gifted - with that valuable asset, tlie football head. Both in defence and attack he excelled. ■ Roberts has plenty of pace and can play good football, but has adopted the habit of trying to beat too many men before passing. This was noticeable last Saturday. He must he g yen credit for his two scoren winch were largely brought aboutnace. If he would only get nd oi the ball quicker, lie would be a topn \Vhyte, at wing-threequarter, showed up conspicuously throughout th • game! particularly in the early po - tion of the first- spell, when ht \\us called on to stem the es of the visitors, which he did ■- cellentlv.
