KAWIU ROAD SUBWAY.
COUNTY COUNCIL FAVOURABLE. A deputation consisting of tlie Mayor of Levin (Mr Hobson), Or. Mortensen and the Town Clerk (Mr Jenkins), waited on the Horowhenua County Council on Saturday in regard to tlie proposed traffic subway under the railway line at Kawiu road.
The Mayor said that in 1923 the County was agreeable to join in and contribute half the cost. The Railway Department then wanted Tyne Street closed, and the matter was dropped. This year it was taken up again in February and just after the recent accident the Department wrote repeating its previous offer that it would give half tile cost provided ,Tyn-e street crossing was closed. As a result of the Borough’s'further representations the Department had now agreed to contribute £250 towards the cost of the subway without- requiring the closing of Tyne Street. The Council considered this was a good basis for discussion, and they asked that the County appoint representatives t-o confer with the Council with a view to negotiating with the Department. The estimated cost previously of the subway was £9OO, but since . then the Department required a greater clearance for subways, and this might add to the cost. Cr. Mortensen said the subway was on a boundary road and there was -a fairly high bank there that lent itself to the construction of the subway. There was a chance of getting a safe crossing and for the sake of human life they should take it. He explained that when it was formerly suggested to close Tyne Street, a petition with 200 signatures was forwarded against it, and the Council thought it .better to leave Tyne street to the Department- to deal with. The Subway was very much.in the interests of the County, especially for stock traffic. They were hoping to obtain a larger contribution from the Department, Cr. Kilsby said the matter should certainly be gone .into as much from the point of view of the safety of railway passengers as from people using the roads. The Mayor was quite justified in faking the action he had done. He felt the Railway Department was not offering enough. Cr. Ryder agreed with Cr. Kilsby. The Chairman said he could see no objection to the Council acting with the Borough along the tines suggested. He moved that Ore. Kilsby, McLeavey and Cafley be a committee to act with the Borough and this was carried.
