SHANNON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

I FORTNIGHTLY MEETING. The Shannon Borough Council met in the Council Chambers on Tuesday evening. Present: His Worship the Mayor ('Mr E. Butt) and Grs. Curran, Roberts, Thwaites', Downes, Watkins, Spencer, Hook. CORRESPONDENCE. From the Manawatu Oroua River Board submitting their scheme for combatting the common menace of the flooding of the Manawatu and Oroua river, which at present discharges over the best lands of the district. The Board asked that representatives be appointed from the Council to appear before the Commission, also in order that the Council may be acquainted with the feeling of the Board in the matter, the latter would esteem it a favour if the Council would give them the earliest opportunity to attend and lay before them, the considerations which have induced the Board to join them as parties before the. Commission.—Resolved that the Board to asked to meet the Council and place their proposals before them. The Clerk of the Kairanga County Council wrote stating that the Stipendiary Magistrate had fixed Wednesday, July 14th at the Courthouse, Palmerston North, at 10.30 a.m. as the date, place and time at which he will hear the representatives of the local bodies (to determine the apportionment of the heavy traffic license fees.—The Town Clerk stated the Palmerston North Borough Council were holding a meeting on Thursday and had asked the Borough to be represented. Gr. Spencer and the Town Clerk were appointed.

From Foxton Chamber of Commerce submitting the following resolution, passed at their annual meeting, for the Council’s consideration and approval: “That, an emphatic protest be entered against any attempts to make- the Oitaki Cottage Hospital a charge on the Paliharston Hospital district, but endorse the policy of one base hospital and appointment of trained nurses where required.”—Tile Council carried a resolution expressing themselves as being in sympathy with Otaki citizens to retain the Otaki Hospital. From Mr A. E. Burling asking the Council to fence the rubbish dump as several of his cows were still getting their feet cut. He also thought he should be allowed the usual £lO per year for use of ithe dump. He also wrote on behalf of all the residents in Johnston Street and Foxton road asking that two road lights be , placed in these streets at once. The question of fencing the rubbish dump was lefit to the Mayor with power to act', while, the request for two road-lights was referred to the Lighting Committee. From Jos. Liggins, making application for a reduction of charge for Borough water supplied to his farmhouse and shed at Shannon. He said he could get the supply from his ram but did not wish to* do soi if he could get a supply at a reasonable fee. He offered £lO 10s per year.—Resolved that Mr Liggins be informed that his request will be favourably considered next rating year. TOWN CLERK’S SALARY. The Finance Committee recommended that the Town Clerk’s salary be .increased 10s per week as firom June Ist last. The Mayor, in supporting the increase said they were fortunate in having such a capable clerk, and if they had to get a man from outside they would have to pay him £5 to £6 per week. He said, although he did private work he never allowed it to interfere, with .the work of the Borough, These remarks 'were endorsed by other councillors and the committees recommendation was confirmed. STANSELL’S DRAIN. Cr. Cuirran reported that he and Gr. Richardson had inspected the work done by the two men working on Stansell’s Drain and they had made an exceptionally good job and had worked hard to do it. He recommended that if the Council intend to go on cleaning the drain that these J .two men be kept on on day wages. He did not think if the work was leit by contract it would be more satisfactory.—lt was resolved that the two men go on with the cleaning of the drain under the supervision of Grs Curran and Richardson. BRIDGES OVER STANSELL’S DRAIN Cr. Spencer reported that one of file ibfridges ovejr Stansell’s drain should be railed, and the other should be strengthened with a couple of uprights to prevent sagging. The bridge in Margaret Street required new running boards. —Left 'to ,'tjhe Road Committee with power to act. ROADMAN’S REPORT. The roadman (Mr F. Haley) reported as follows: —We have carted 41 yards of metal on to Stafford, Clapham and Margaret Streets. Have cleaned about 60 chains of water tables and completed the pipe drain running along Plimmer Terrace. Two concrete ramps and a wood culvert with flood gate for drain between Messrs Richardson and Wilkinson’s properties have been put in. Have spent two days at, head of waterworks shifting logs and boulders and turning the water to the other side of the creek head. This work will .take about two or three more days; also Inspected pipe line and galleries. Scoured water mains and collected and carted rubbish during month.
