CHAMPIONSHIP POINTS.
HUI MAI’S WATERLOO.
WANDERERS’ SHOW GOOD FORM
IN SECOND SPELL.
Hui Mai failed to ..maintain their unbeaten record on Saturday, when they were soundly frounced by^Wanderers; by sixteen points to three. Hui Mai,' in the first spell, showed excellent form, and, although two points down at half-time, they kept Wanderers on the defence most of the spell, their backs, taking full advantage of the openings made by the /Green forwards, treating the spectators to some scintillating rushes. In the second , half, however, the condition of the Black'forwards told itsUale for they gradually wore their opponents down, and the latter part of the game was one long incessant attack by Wanderers. The Hui Mai backs stuck to their task gamely, but, beaten forward, they could not withstand the Black onslaughts. It was votpd by many to be one of the best club games so far this season, and Mr T. Parata, whoi controlled the game, came (in for a lot of praise for his work with the whistle. With the exception of one or two occasions , when he failed to- ■ apply the advantage rule, his interpretations throughout were the best seen in Levin this season.
Despite the rain on the previous day, the ground was in fair condition.
THE GAME DESCRIBED
Hui Mai' - won the toss, and Jacob kicked off against a strong westerly breeze. Wanderers immediately went to Hie attack, the forwards dribbling through, but Johnson kept them out with a big punt. Graham sent Williams away, and the movement terminated in a duel between the opposing packs in Hui Mai’s quarter. A Green forward was caught off-side, and Jacob tried a shot, but the ‘wind was too strong and Cook found touch at midfield. - A solo effort by Nees gained further ground for his side, until the Black backs retaliated with' a passing, rush that ended with Graham breaking clean away, but, with Jacob in attendance and only Johnson to beat, x he kicked to touch. , Fumbling by Ryder, allowed the Green van guard, headed hy Tana and Koro, to sweep clown on to' Wanderers’ line but Ryder redeemed himself by finding touch. Good line-out work by Bond and Skilton saw the Blacks rush play upfield. Hui Mai were awarded a penalty for obstruction, and Johnson essayed a shot at goal from half-way. The length was good, but the direction wrong, ana
the Blacks forced. '' Hui Mai now set to in earnest, and play settled down in Wanderers 25, a relieving kick was smothered by Tana, but Ryder again cleared. After Johnson had failed with another penalty the Green backs gave a glimpse of their quality, the ball travelling along the line,, until the movement ended with Gray being just forced out in the corner. Another passing rusliby the Green rearguard, was nullified by Wallace taking a pass offside and Jacob, relieved the pressure with a penalty. The Blacks were quick to seize advantage of this lei up and from the line-out Jacob and 'H ’ McDonald burst through. The move was temporarily held up ni midfield, hut Williams snapped up, and centering nicely, saw Jacob further punt high into the face of Hui Mai’s goal. Johnson misjudged the bounce of the ball, and Wanderers winger, who had come up at. full speed gathered in and shot over under the posts. The movement was as it was ««xpacted and was a sudden reversal foT Hui who had been attacking for somts time. A fine movement between Cook, Bryant and Wallace, saw Ryder stop the last named, with a great tackle on Wanderers’ line, and H. McDonald cleared with a fine solo eifort that took play to midfield, where Hakaraia dummied his way furthei upheld, but another effort by the Hui Mai back line returned activities bad; to Wanderers’ area. Several scrums were formed and from one of these Koro was caught off-side, and baittime was called as Jacob found rouon Upon resumption, Wanderers quick ]y made it evident that they were going to make the pace a cracker, iut for ten minutes or so, Hui Mai hung on grimly, and the Blacks could net penetrate. At last, however, T. McDonald fed Wiriiata from a Scrum, and this player dummying his opponent sent on to Jacob, to Tohu, bin a knock-on held the attackers up. Jacob missed with a easy penalty, and a relieving kick was accepted by St. Clair, who booted infield. . The bounce of the ball beat Bryant, and Hakaraia, gathering in quickly, neatly eluded several tacklers, and raced over near the posts. Jacob again failed with an easy kick. Wanderers 8, Hui Mai 3. The Southern forwards were now tiring quickly, and were finding it difficult to stand up to the pace s- k by the Blacks. ■ ■ A mark bv H. McDonald was fumbled badly by D’Ath, and the Levin pack swept down to within a snort distance from the Greens’ line. Bryant endeavoured to work clear, but was quickly dumped by B. St, Clair, and from a scramble, Gray failed to clear, which made matters ■ anything but rosy for Hui Mai. T. McDonald initiated several rushes among the Black backs, but; good tackling by the Green rearguard kept them out. Try as Hui Mai would, however, they coqld net lift the siege, and St, Clair on the wing missed scoring by inches only, on several occasions. play swung across field and from a hoe-out, McLeavey tried hard to battle over. A serum was ordered and the ball came out on Wanderers’ side, R. St. Glair snapped up, but lost control, T. McDonald was handy, however, and tell across to score wide out. Jacob’s kick missed.
Wanderers 11, Hui Mai 3. The Greens now played like a beaten team, and a very uninteresting spell followed, this score. Just is the spectators’ thoughts were turning homewards, they were stirred from their legarthy by a pretty movement that culminated in a try, after the most spectacular piece of work during the whole- game. A line-out near half-way saw Bond neatly open it out to Jacob. This player running strongly dummied his way past Cook and Bryant, and drawing Wallace, sent on to Hakaraia who in turn transferred to Williams, who ran over unopposed. Jacob, with an excellent kick converted from wide out as time was called, leaving Wanderers winners by the unexpected margin of 13 points.
