FORTNIGHTLY MEETING.
The above meeting was lield in the ■ Council Chamberson Tuesday evening. Present:, brs. Curran, Thwaites,, Downes,.,Watkins', Spencer, Book, and Richardson. • The, Town Clerk apologised lor the absence of His Worship The Mayor, who had 'been called to Levin during the afternoon owing to the illness of his brother. As a Deputv Mayor had never- been -appointed;, hh'tusked'the Council to ap-' - point one of their number to the chair. ,Cr. Downes proposed Gr. Curran, but: the latter declining, Cr. Thwaites-was elected. ; GORRESPONDEINtE, ' Finin' the Wellington, Drain Pipe Go. Ltd., forwarding' quotations for field pipes, unhanged.--Received. From Assistant Under-Secretary of Department of Internal Affairs, in- - forming the Council that pursuant to the provisions of Section 11, Mana-watu-Otroua River Oiisitrict Amendment Act, 1925, - the Manawatu-Oroua River'Board made application to the Governor-General to apportion between' 1 that Board and several other local authorities the cost of the operations carried out Or proposed, ’to |be carried out by dhat Board under its statutory power. *The Board had -named the Council as' a local authority which will received benefit from its operations. The Commission: appointed to inquire into the matter: consists of Messrs'R. M.;'Watson, iS.M., Fellding, A. C. Kock, civil engineer-, Auckland,/ and H.- E. Leighton, auctioneer and - estate agent, Wellington. •' The letter stated that any information' the Council required could: be obtained from /tlie chairman (Mr Watson) el d over until, further information is obtained on the matter. ■•/ •From ■ the commissioner > of-ydrown Lands, re, the GoiuieiTs option to purchase land at -Mangaore for a metal pit, which has ' expired, enquiring, 'what the Council intended doing-in the -matter.'—‘lt was resolved to; en-

Association for'their donation. , Tire clerk of the Kairanga County Council wrote pointing out that the Council’s share of the'apportionment, of the, heavy traffic .fees collected, on the basis of other apportionments,' ■ would have been £29. —The Town Clerk stated that 'Shannon’s apportionment for this year, had been the same as FOxton, viz., a fifty-fifty bas- . is, with the result that trie revenue of the Rorough had benefited by £lO3, as a total of £203 had been collected in heavy traffic fees. He said, no
doubt, new apportionments would be made for,.the coming' year, also pointing? out that Shannon was differently situated’ to other boroughs and counties, as‘its heavy traffic was practically’all confined within the borough, and they were therefore entitled to a much larger share of the fees than most of the other interested public bodies. ; ' ; ’
ROADMAN’S REPORT. The roadman (Mr. F. Raley) report-. etT as follows: —We have carted 591yards of metal oil to Plimmer Tierrace, Main North Road, Ada, Margaret, Ballance a: id Stafford Streets; also had grader- over Main North road, Bryce, Ballance and parts of Grey, Clapham and Stout Streets. Have metalled footpaths leading to Mr Ellwood’s’ residence in Margaret Sitr-eet. • Three concrete pipes have been put in at the crossing in front of Mr F. King’s, Stout' Street. Hlave cleaned out about 40 chains of watertables and cut drain through Plimmer Terrace; also inspected pipe line and ' galleries and scoured water mains and had found everything in order. ROAD COMMITTEE’S REPORT. The chairman of the Roads Committee (Or. Spencer) reported as follows:—Since the last meeting vthe committee have -inspected various parts of the town,'particularly Stansell’s drain and the .bridges in that vicinity. .In respect.to the. .bridges, they were in’, very fair order. The drain needs cleaning out, hut at the time of inspection there was a lot of water in the drain, but the time is mare Opportune now. Had inspected the metal pit now being worked by Mr Christian with a view to securing ia regular supply of metal for the roads. This metal would be satisfactory and could be Pdt ln dumps a,t 7;s per-yard. An inspection had been made of the water lying on Nathan Terrace and they had . decided to put in a piped djam in Plimmer Terrace to carry the water away which at.present accumulates at mat spot. A staff had been mad / cutting the drain which will seven chains of piping at an estimated cost of £lO per cbain. Deneally, the condition, of the Boioug roads was satisfactory, hut a little more grading wa§ necessary, ,wni could be done when the weather was suitable. He asked that something be done straight away in respect to Stan,sell’s drain. . , Cr. Richardson said the drain could • he trimmed and'cleaned-out-now. He pointed out that one of the outlets, of main was blocked on a portion , nf me continuation of Graham .Street. -.-This was left to the Bioiad Committee to inspect, with power to act. On the motion of Cr. Spencer, seconded Or. Vovmes, it was decided
to call tenders for the work of cleaning Stansell’s drain, the work to be carried out according) to specifications drawn up by tire Hoads Committee "and to be under their supervision.
’ Dealing with the question of the purchase of metal - for the roads Gr. Spencer said approximately 300 yards were required and he moved that tenders he called for 30.0 yards of metal to' he delivered in three dumps. He said that under the present system they' were getting their metal in a costly manner, and he expressed himself as strongly opposed to a continuation of the present arrangement. Cr. Downes: Would it not pay better, if it is decided to purchase 300 yards of metal, to have it carted by motor lorry and have, say, 200 yards screened on to the roads where required and put the remainder in a convenient dump.
Or. Spencer agreed that. it would, rte said his idea of the 'dumps, was only one way of getting away from the present system. Gontiiiuing, ,he said, they diad not got the metal convenient and tile men are’working under difficulties. If the metal is convenient the roads can be properly dressed. The metal is required at. once, as if wet weather comes the roads will be in a bad state. It was resolved that tenders' be called for the supply of 300 yards of metal, the size not to exceed H inches in diameter, and that 200 yards be spread on the Borough reads wheife .required at the. rate-of one yard to the chain, or more, if required and 100 yards be -put in a dump at the Domain gates. The work of spreading, etc., to he carried out under the supervision of tire Road Committee. / GENERAL. 5 Tlie Town Clerk was instructed to obtain quotations.for ,250 9-inch 2-foot Held pipes, unflanged, to be used in the drain' in Plimmer Terrace for carrying away surface water. An offer of a rubbish tip on Mr Mason’s property, Sheehan Street, was received. —The Town Clerk said the Health Officer had inspected the site and approved of it. Also' that the Mayor had recommended that a lease should he secured for a term of years. He pointed out; that it would be necessary for a culvert to be put in to get access with a dray.—lt was decided to secure a lease •erf the site for-a term at a rental of £lO per annum. The matter of puting -in a culvert was left, to the. Roads Committee with, power to act. The rates struck last week foir the ensuing year were confirmed.', The .accounts were then passed for payment and the meeting adjourn et.
