CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Shannon Chamber of Commerce was held last evening. In the unavoidable absence of Mr Hyde (president) Mr R. L. Tippler presided. CORRESPONDENCE. ( A reply was received from the Rail- j way Department re the Chamber's request for a dry dock at the local rail- j way station, expressing regret that the request cannot be acceded to, as money was needed toll' more uigent improvements in other parts. It was j resolved that a petition be forwarded \ further urging the erection. of a dry dock, to the Minister of Railways, signed by business Arms, with coveiing lettersfrom Messrs .Seifert and Spoil's and the Shannon Dairy Co. . The Wellington Chamber of -'Commerce writing in reference to the proposed iShaiiuoin-Eketahuna road stated that from the information before their Executive Council, the latter does not consider the proposition ax feasible one, and the large expenditure', viz.,' £50,000, which would appear to he needed, could; pot, in their opinion be justified at the present pipe. They understood that the road would have to rise another 1300 feet and through difficult country, while no new areas of land would be opened up, find, considering the difficult climb, it would not be likely that any considerable, amount of traffic would as yet be attracted to the route.—-it was resolved to try and get information on this matter. Mr. Llnklater submitted the following reply received from the secretary of the Post and Telegraph Department, stating that the Shannon office had been thoroughly inspected . and as the outcome it had been decided to close at 4.15 p.m. the mail to Palmerston North at present despatched at 2.20 p.m. It had also been decided to 'erect in 'the Newtown area a posting box which will be cleared at 10.30 a.m. aiid 3 p.m.—A vote of thanks was accorded Mr Linklatex for his efforts * in this matter. ,
