SPORTING.
It is probable that Mr. Boss Webby wiU have charge of Imperial Spark when that- horse goes to Sydney. The Bisogne —Haversack colt purchased by Mr. J. Bull, at the Hawe'ra Sale almost immediately changed hands* the Huntervill'e sportsman disposing of Mm at a slightly increased figure. The new owner is Mr. Laurenson, of Hawera.
No definite -announcement has yet been made as to whether J. H. Jefferd purposes taking Rapine and others of his charges to Sydney for* the* spring racing, but it is understood that, it' the trip eventuates, R. Reed will accompany the team. Mr. W. R. K'eniball will again have a big team in the field this season. At the present time he has a dozen yearlings receiving their initial education at Masterton.
S. Reid is spoken of as the mentor who will take charge of Mr. E. Riddiford's hurdlers, Dubious and Master Peter, pending the making of arrangements for their training. ;
The Rangitikei owner, Mr. James Bull, met with a motoring mishap last week, but despite the fact that the car was smashed, Mr. Bull got off with a severe cut in one arm and minor abrasions. The accident did not, however, prevent him from seeing his candidates run at Hawera.
Rational, who formed one of the initial progeny of Absurd, has displayed a hardiness that' is not always a characteristic of the line' to which he owns (descent, writes "Phaeton." The veteran figured among th'e contestants at the Egmont meeting last week, and it is a popular opinion that he had bad luck to be beaten .in the Mokoia Handicap, in which he carried 9.0 and ran Benzora (8.2) to a neck. Rational mad'e his debut on the turf at two years old in the early spring 0 f 1920, and, as up to the present he has contested 97 races, he is pretty sure to carry his score to 100 before the present season closes.
Some thousand-guinea yearlings prove worth the money, says "Poseidon" in the Sydney Sun, but there are others who fail to give any return at all. Such a horse is Hamilcar. He was an aristocrat of the 1920 sales, but now he is one of the worst performers on the unregistered courses. Just after Glenacre had won\the A.J.C. Sires' Produce Stakes, his owners, Messrs W. V. Manton and L. J. Bridge, gave 1250 guineas for the Linaere-Dependent colt, who is now known as Hamilcar, but his racing cafeer has been one long slide down the ladder, and now he is at the bottom. Recently he was a runner in the third division of the Maiden Handicap at Victoria Park, and his poor performance suggested that he will have his work cut out'to win. a race, 'oven on the pony courses. New Zealand has sent some fine junipers to. Australia (writes "Poseidon" in the Sydney Sun), and the appearance at Randwick next month of the Dominion candidates, Sir .Rosebery and Llewellyn, would add interest to the A.J.C. jumping double. Both geldings are engaged in the two £2OOO races. Oi the pair, Sir Ros'ebery, who, is by Sir Knox from Merrie Rose, and is aged, is the more distinguished performer. He was topweight in both the N.Z. Grand, National Hurdle Race and Steeplechase,' run last August/ having 11.9 in the hurdle, and 12.3 in the steeple, and finished seventh in each race. 'Last season, Ids three wins included; an important double, as he scored in the Great Northern Hurdle, Of £2QOO, about 21 miles, and the Great
Northern Steeplechase, of £2250, ?»l miles. He had 10.12 in the hurdle race and 11.5 in the steeplechase. On Great Northern Steeplechase day, Llewellyn also proved successful, winning the Auckland Hunt Club Cup Steeplechase. That was one of three similar victories gained last season by Llewellyn, who this season won a hurdle double at Avondale, and was a second in a Hunt Steeplechase. Llewellyn is a six-year-old by Lucullus, from Donation.
