DRAINAGE ON NATHAN TERRACE.
(To the Editor.) Dear Sir,—'Six. weeks ago Or. Richardson brought under the notice of the Council that half the drainage water from, the Borough was being drained on to Gardner’s property in Nathan Terrace. The Council, 1 believe, are now going to turn the water down Pld miner Terrace, which is only fair and just. Cr. Hook strongly objects to this loin the grounds that it is a “natural water course.” I am afraid he is suffering under a. delusion. He says that se will bring old residents of the town to prove that it is an odd water course. Well, 'Mr Editpr, why bring old residents into the matter. ■ The water used to lie around the streets of Shannon, so some eighteen years ago the 1 Horowhenua County Council put in water tables in Stout Street, Ballanee Street, and part of Pliinmer Terrace. The next move was to put a. culvert from, Pliinmer Terrace underneath the line and railway yards into Nathan Terrace and the only outlet for the water was Gardner’s (property. This was allowed by Mrs J. Gardner on condition that it should only foe temporary—and as soon as possible the water would be provided with an outlet other than her property. Now Gardner’s cut a drain to safeguard themselves from being flooded’ out in the winter time or that there was heavy rain because it turns the paddocks into a lake. Since the Shannon Borough Council have taken over from the Horowhenua Council they ’.have concreted their water tables and also have laid water on to the town. These two good improvements have been the means of doubling the surplus water. As before it used to make a pond—it is now 'a good sized lake and Cr. • Hook, on top of this want Gardners toi pay half the cost to turn the water off ihcir property. These are a few instances for him to ponder over fin his lucid moments: .(a) 11 the culvert wasn’t there, there wouid ne no passage tor the water to reach Gardner’s property (common sense); (b) When the Miannon , Borough took over from the Horowhenua County, Council, they took over 'holus-bolus and therefore they tool* over all their liabilities so the Shannon Borough Council are getting out luckily without damage claimed against them. 1 am, etc., AN OLDER RESIDENT THAN CR. HOOK.
