COUNTY VANQUISH SHANNON.
j • A DISAPPOINTING GAME. COUNTY SET THE MUSIC —SHANNON 1 DANCE TO IT. County and Shannon provided the star attraction on the Domain on Saturday, hut those who anticipated a fast, spectacular game were sadly disappointed. In the first spell, there were times when it looked as if the spectators’ hopes were to he realised, hut as the game went on it developed into a close forward tussle, with both rear divisions failing lamentably to take advantage of any opportunities offering. Shannon at home, and Shannon away are evidently two different teams, and- in any case, they adopted entirely the wrung methods during the play. With an obvious advantage . in the loose work, they foolishly elected to make it tight. This suited the County forwards’ style of play. Summed up, County set the music, and Shannon danced to it. Owing 'to the absence of Warren and Hiwi, the Blues were badly disorganised behind the scrum. Before the match, the general impression seemed to be that ’ .Shannon would have rather an easy win, but when the game started the Blue forwards quickly disabused this idea, and as the game progressed, they gradually gained the ascendancy. THE* GAME DESCRIBED.
When play starved Moynifian was the first to show out, dribbling away with the ball tit his ’feet, but Webber gathered in and .returned play to Shannon’s 25.
Roberts was iquickly smothered while attempting to relieve, and the County forwards swept down on to ,thie line. Hunt (received a nasty buinp on the hip and play was held up. Hoskings was badly obstructed on the line out and a penalty to County saw Tuna ni-iss a" fairly easy kick.
R. 'McDonald accepted the dropout, and neatly dodging! a. bunch oi Reds, found touch a few yards lrom the ■ line. The Reds forwards came through with a fine burst and alter being temporarily held up at midfield, Marsh, Moyniban, and Johansen carried on into County’s- territory. The Shannon backs now attempted several movements, but theirefforts at passing were deplorable, and the forwards were compelled to jump into the breach to hold the advantage. After Udy had up-ended Johansen with a great tackle, Walls gained possession, and sent on to Puti to Roberts, who made a break for the corner, but M. 'McDonald forced him into touch. From tihe kick-out! Hunt tried a pot which fell short, and Udy relieved to half-way.
Fumbling by Roberts let Bunin and Runa thro,-ugh, but the Red forwards again came to the rescue and returned itO' midfield. Back came the Blues and at a line-out near Shannon’s line a short throw-in by Roberts, was readily accepted by Greig, who raced over without a hand being placed upon him. Udy failed with the kick. County 3, Shannon 1). This was rather 'unexpected by Shannon, and they quickly set but to 1 equalise. Moynihan land Go’, came upheld at a great rate, Hunt marked near half-way, and 'tried his luck with a shot, but the distance was too much for him. A weak transfer from Puti to Roberts was quickly pounced upon, afnd IPanaiba, Dunn and Tuna, led a Blue rush into the Reds’ area. The County pack now held the advantage for some time, •bust instead of keeping the leather at their feet, were trying to handle too much and this alone kept them out. After M. McDonald had made a determined effort to go over, -Parata sent the County backs away for ‘h ftnst time, but Heremaia tried to cut through, and was quickly smothered. Webber recovered, and sent on to Ransfleld, but this player in turn was well tackled, and a free kick to Shannon eventually relieved the pressure. . Hesitation by the Blue backs, proved expensive, for before they could collect themselves together, the Beds' had surged through and a fine forward movement was topped off by
l*~*xl* ISiSr.#-'' J 1 Hall going over to equalise. Hunt failed to put his side in the lead. County 3, Shannon 3. The game from now on, was inclined to become rather too heated at times, and Referee Sciascia was compelled to keep a firm control over the players, several havig to be cautioned. A bad speculation by Udy, , made trouble for his side, and only : a determined resistance by the Bme j vanguard, kept the- {Shannon men I from increasing their lead, and half--1 time sounded after a desperate enj counter on County’s line. J County immediately went to the attack when play re-started. Tuna i caught Dalzell in possession, and a chance slipped by, as a bunch of Blue forwards overran the ball ana
Hunt relieved. Following through quickly, Moynihan dribbled past the County hacks but Udy snapped up, and sent out to M. McDonald, who gained 30 yards with a fine run, before being tackled by Roberts. From the line-out, R. McDonald punted high, and regained possession, but his pass went astray. The Blue forwards now held the upper hand, but their good work was nullified by the men behind the scrum, no semblance of concerted work being apparent by the County l}3idks Fast but scrappy play .in' midfield, ended, in the Reds favonr, and offside play by McKinnon gave Hunt a chance to goal from a difflcul position. A good attempt just wen outside the post. , A great kick by Webber, who had dropped back to full, found touch at Shannon’s 25,, but Hill and Hendricksen cleared to neutral territory. The Blues forwards packing.- well, slowly worked back to Shannon’s line, Dunn and R. McDonald shot out ’of the ruck and dribbled wer, but McDonald was glaringly obstructed when about to fall on the ball. The referee did not notice this however, and a force-down resulted. The Blues now redoubled their efforts to save the game, and a fine sprint down the touch-lin© by M. McDonald saw Roberts bring off a wonderful tackle. . , County, maintained an incessant attack as time drew near. Para.ta worked the blind side from a scrum, but M. McDoald did not get up in time for his pass and the Reds booted out. It proved fatal, however, for T. Parata snapped up a,t half way, and slipping through neatly raced down the centre. When hemmed in, he shot the hall out to Heremaia, to Palmer, to M. McDonald, who raced over in the corner ■ amidst frenzied cheering by the County supporters The kick .missed, time was up, and County filed off thoroughly de,serving of their win. Mr Sciaskia had a hard game r control, but did ills work well. Bosk i-ngs, who was playing well, in the County pack, had the misfortune to receive a broken hand, the result of a kick in the scrum.
SHANNON JUNIORS DEFEAT WANDERERS. (Shannon Correspondent). The above teams met on the Shannon Domain on Saturday, the home team securing a decisive victory by 28 points to a penalty try secured by their opponents. The Shannon boys gave a splendid display of football beating the visitors in all departments, the latter’s play being faulty throughout. Shannon’s rear division, during game, provided some excellent passing bouts, and the maner iiri which they handled the ball would have done credit to the senior team. As a result of their combination and handling of the ball they registered 17 points in the first spell, their opponent© failing to score, while in the second half they added another eleven, Wanderers notching a penalty goal through the agency of Pat. .Napier. Tries for Shannon were secured by Robbie (2), Satherley, Pentecost, P. Morgan, S. NeWtlh, 'Chapman and M. Coyle. Two of the fries were converted by Picard.
