SHANNON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

FORTNIGHTLY MEETING. The,above meeting was held in the Council Chambers on Tuesday evening. Present: His Worship the Mayor. (Mr E. Butt) and Gits. Gurran, Thwaites, Watkins, spencer, Richardson, Hook, and Roberts. CORRESPONDENCE. The Department of Health for- .. warded circular setting- out the work of committees • for combating epidemic disease.—Received. The Resident Engineer of the Public Works Department wrote asking far the loan of the Council's grader, two horses and two men for trie purpose of grading the road between the Shannon boundary and Mangaore; also if the grader is available for the work, what would the charge per day ibo to the 'Department.—lt was decided that the charge be £5 iper day, and 'that it be left to the Road Committee 10 decide when the grader and man would be available. From Town .Clerk, Hamilton Borough Co unc i 1 aski ng the Counci i' s support of. the following {resolution: "That his Counci] views with the gravest concern the increasing burden which is being placed on its ratepayers in respect to the formation and maintenace of the streets and is unanimously of the opinion:— (1) That such increased charges are due solely to the demands of, and the damage paused by motor traffic (2) That it is totally inequitable to .burden the 'ratepayers with the whole of these charges; {3) That the Government be- strongly urged to introduce the necessary legislation during the coming session and as a matter of .urgency, transferring an equitable proportion of this burden from the ratepayer, to the user of the roadS: and streets."—'Received. The 'Vatua/tion Department wrote stating that it was doubtful if the work of - the Borough, would be completed in time to en- ; able the Council to base their rates on same for the ensuing year.—Received.

HOUSING COMMITTEE'S REPORT. The above committee reported as follows on the question of municipal buildings:—Ait a meeting held on the 18th it was 'suggested that it might be advisable to place three proposals before the ratepayers, viz.: (1) -A scheme costing £9OOO which' would 'consist of Municipal Buildings complete and conveniences with dwelling quarters and hall; (2) scheme to cost £2OOO -to* consist of Chambers, library, reading room and conveniences, leaving out shops, dwelling quarters and. hall; (3) a scheme v-f £7OO to renovate the present building as at first suggested. The report stated' that the committee realised .that it is necessary that something should be doine './and .recommended that the Council go into committee to debate the three issues and attempt to arrive at a solution of the problem. There was present at the .'meeting the Mayor, and Grs. .Spencer and* Watkins.

After the Town Clerk had read the report to the Council, tin the motion . of the Mayor the Council decided to go into committee to discuss the three schemes, and after a lengthy discussion it .Was resolved, on the motion of Cr. Roberts, seconded by Gr. Thwaites, that the following propos- . als to© placed before the ratepayers. (1) To raise £IO,OOO to touild new municipal '■offices, municipal theatre, social hall, library, ladies' Test room and living rooms; (2) To raise £7OO to .renovate the '.present municipal building. An. .amendment toy Cr. Gurvair that living rooms be not included in No. 1. proposal, failed to find a seconder. - GENERAL. " Cr. Richardson drew the council's attention to the condition .of- Stansell's drain Avhich he said badly needed cleaning, the rain having caused it to flood over.. Also that two of the bridges over the drain are toeing undermined and during the flood on Tuesday morning one ; was floating. He suggested- that' the sides of the -drain be brimmed down and the ■metal cleaned out.-Tt was resolved that the Road-Committee inspect the drain and bridges and be.given power to act. '. • .. ..
