Ngaruahoe in eruption -presents an impressive spectacle from the Main Trunk Dine. The Rev. J. D. McArthur, who was a traveller by. *the Limited last week, mentioned to a Chronicle representative that the glow in the sky could be seen at O.liakune, and the reflection ibecame more vivid until Waimarino was reached, where the train approaches within twelve miles of the volcano. Here the eruption could be distinctly seen, huge masses, of volcanic matter and red hot rock being thrown out about every five minutes. The rocks which, were really of 'enormous size, looked little bigger than marbles, and, falling back on the mountain sides, were visible rolling down the steep slopes until they lost their incandescence. Ah other curious leffect tcaine from the deep gullies filled with molten rock and lava, the glow from which gave the impress ton that one was looking through cracks in the mountain side. A dense (black pull of ! smoke hung over the lop of Ngaruahoe, and the under side of t-liie was lit up vividly by the flames of the crater. Altogether the spectacle was a striking manifestation .of the mighty natural forces at work. in the earth and it held the undivided attention of all the passengers who crowded on to the platforms to view the eruption.
