LEVIN’S POPULATION.
45 PER GENT. INCREASE IN TEN YEARS. That the growth oi Levin within the past few. years has not been of a superficial nature, or that its apparent prosperity has not been deceptive, is clearly shown by the results, of the census taken last month, which have now been analysed by the district census enumerator, Mr JB. Magee, and been made available for publication. In I'Jl6 ■ the total population of the Levin Borough numbered 1630. Five years later it had increased to 1979, and it has now been declared at 2360, made up of 1149 males and 1211 females (Europeans). Added to this is the Maori population of 92 persons (males and females in equal numbers) so- that irrespective of Maoris, there has been an increase of 381 over the 1921 census and 730 more than the one taken in 1916. In other words the population of Levin is 45 per cent, higher than it was ten years ago. DWELLINGS.
There are 556 dwellings occupied by Europeans in the Borough; 15 Maori residences; 8 uninhabited dwellings. and 7 houses the owners of which are temporarily absent,' ami ’ more in course of erection. Exclusive of the last mentioned the total number of dwellings is 586. THE COASTAL BOROUGHS. The following table gives tlie details of the four Boroughs on this coast at the past -three census takings:.
OTAKI CENSUS RETURNS. AP PRECIABLE IN CBiEAS E RECORDED. Tiie statistical returns of population for Otaki -have been released for publication by the census enumerator, Mr B. Magee. They show an-in-crease of 230 since the last census was taken in 1921. 'The figures for the latter showed tlie population at tlia time to be 1075 (excluding Maoris) whilst the present returns (also excluding the Maori residents) give the population of the Borough at 1305. The detailed particulars of the present census returns are: Males 611, females 694, total 1305. Of the total Maori population of 275, 143 of these are males and J 32 females, making a grand total of Europeans and Maoris of 1580 people. Statistics for the Maori population in the Otaki Borough at the time oi the 1921 census are not available. DWELLINGS. The total number of dwellings (in habited and uninhabited) is 41.4, oxeluding two in course of erection. The details of this number are as follows: Inhabited, European 309, Maori 47, total. 356. There are eight, untenanted houses, 46 tempo.ruril\ untenanted residences-, .and flhree dwellings, tlie occupants of which were away on holidays at tlie time of taking Ihe.se returns. The above particulars include Ihe population of that portion of the Otaki Borough which it is proposed to exclude from the Borough, representing 27 Europeans and Tmigmis, and 17 Maoris.
