NEW SHANNON BRIDGE.

PREPARATORY WORK STARTS THIS WEEK. Mr J. Hannah, engineer, Public Works Department, presided over the monthly meeting of No. 9 District Highways Board yesterday, there being a large attendance of county delegates and engineers. Shannon Bridge. The chairman reported in connection with the erection of the new bridge over the Manawatu at Shannon that he had been in consultation with the department’s constructional engineer and they had come to the conclusion that 110 feet spans were more suited to the locality. This week surveyors would be at work making the necessary surveys and next week a boring party would be engaged getting the depth for the cylinders. Ivoputaroa Deviation. Mr Hannah also reported that in company with the district engineer (Mr R. Ronayne), he had tramped over the route between Heatherlea (Devin) and Shannon, via Koputaroa, which had been suggested as more- suitable for the main highway than the present road over the Ihakara hill. His report had gone forward, but would not yet have reached the Minister, consequently a. reply could not be expected for a day or two yet. The Board then went into committee to consider the estimates.
