The shooting season opens on Saturday morning. Up to four o’clock yesterday afternoon only nine licenses had been issued locally.
Arrangements have been made for the special engagement of Signor Preboni Hanson, the. celebrated Danish tenor, at the Maoriland Theatre, on Wednesday, May sth.
The committee ,of the Shannon Football Club wish to acknowledge donations towards the Club’s funds from. Messrs H. Butt, J. Curran, C. H. iSpeii's, C. Young, W. Cochrane, Jhing Lee, Chong Pok, T. James and H. Bassett.
In this issue Mrs S. Finlay conveys her sincere thanks to all who rendered assistance when her home was destroyed by fire on Wednesday morning, especially to Mr and Mrs F. Haley for their kindness.
The .Ladies’ Guild of Veil. Bede’s Church will .hold the first, of their fortnightly dances 'in the Parish Hlall on Tuesday evening next. Dancing will commence at 8 p.m. and the Maori Orchestra will provide the music.
The annual meeting of the Shannon branch of the Plunket .Society will he held in the Council Chambers on Friday evening, May 7th, at 7.30 p.m. A full attendance of . members is requested and any persons who are willing to assist w,ith the work are cordially invited to attend.
.Before the business was connnenced at the Borough Council meeting •on Tuesday evening, Mr Geo. Watkins, who. was elected ito fill the vacancy .on the Council, was sworn in and took his .seat at the table. He received the congratulations of the Mayor and councillors.
At the Magistrate's Court at Palmerston North this week before Mr J. L. Stout, ,S. M., John Turoa, of Shannon, was ordered to pay C, C. Franks (Mr Ongley) £l2, ’6s 9d forthwith, in default 14 days’ imprisonment. J. McDonald, Shannon, former, was ordered to pay the Shannon Co-op. Trading Society (Mr G. I. McGregor) £33 10s Id forthwith, in default 28 days’ imprisonment; warrant to he suspended so long as defendant pays' £5 a month.
The case commenced at the Magistrate’s Court at IPalmerston North last week Wherein the Mangahao Butchery Go. (Mr Laurenson). claimed from j. ‘T. 'Bovis, of Shannon, the suin of £l6 18s 5d for 13 ewes allegedly supplied to defendant, was concluded on Tuesday morning, when, after the hooks of the plaintiff company had been produced and inspected, the Magistrate (Mr J. L. Stout) gave .judgment for the full amount claimed, with costs £7 ss.
Mr Edwin Dennis, a qualified teacher of voice production, singing, and interpretation of music, will be m Shannon next Tuesday mlorning at Mr Moody’s office from 9.30 till id .0 a.m. to- interview ladies and gentlemen. A hearty invitation is given to anyone desiring to receive expert advice without fee or obligation. If sufficient inducement offers Mr Dennis will come and give lessons every Tuesday in Shannon. This is a splendid opportunity for anyone 'wishing to improve, their voice. • Mr Dennis is London trained, and Mr I*. A view of the window will convince any one of that..* Saturday morning will witness the opening of . the duck-shootiug season. A good number of pt-mbs have been procured locally and sportsmen ■ arc anticipating a good opening. Given suitable weather some good bags should, be collected off different lakes along this coast.

The popularity oil the C.P.R. dances at Tokoinaru owe much to their congenial atmosphere, as well as >he fact of the admission fee being accessible to almost every member of the dancing public. The first of these dances is to be held on Wednesday night next, the charge of 3s 6d including -the bus fare to and from Tokoinaru. The Juzzmanians are playing.
A gasholder with a capacity of 1000 cubic feet of gas was on a truck at the Auckland Railway Station preparatory to' being sent to Whangarei. As a porter passed by he noticed a jet of flame Issuing lrum the valVe on the holder. The railway employee cut off the gas supply and then all stood clear, fearing an -explosion. The city fire brigade was called, and the blaze was -extinguished, no damage of any kind being done.
High prices for stock are apparently not confined to cattle and horses, as it is reported that the lien of Mr H. Williams (Clirist(churc,h), which recently completed a record -egg-lay-ing run of 345 eggs in 365 days, in a Christchurch egg-laying test, has been sold for 50 guineas to a breeder of pure-bred- poultry in America. As the purchase price of her progeny may be in the vicinity of £2O apiece, the selling price of this record-breaker is not surprising.
Whilst a. car driven toy Rodney Goldingham, of Palmerston North,, was descending the Ihakara Hill yesterday afternoon, t-lie near-side rear wheel came o*ff and the ca.r made a plunge towards the fence which separates the roadway from a considerable drop. The car struck the fence, and was diverted slightly from its course, the driver toeing enabled to steer it into the soft bank On the right-hand side of the road. After receiving assistance from a passing motorist the damaged car was able to proceed Levin-wards.
