ELECTION OF COUNCILLOR.
MR G. WATKINS ELECTED. The extraordinary - election for a councillor to fill the vacancy caused by Hie promotion of Mr E. Butt, to tne Mayoralty, was held yesterday. Little interest was taken as can be judged bv the fact that- only 241 electors recorded their votes out of a total oi 600 on the roll. There were three candidates for the vacancy, viz., Messrs D. McLaggan. A. .Richards and G. Watkins. The poll closed at 7 p.m. and a few minutes later die returning officer, Mr J. T. 80-vis, announced the result which was as follows: Watkins, Geo. ... 118 McLaggan, Donald 84 Richards, Arthur ... 38 Informal ... ... ... ••• 1 Mr Watkins returned thanks to .iho.se/who- had placed him at the head \ M the poll a; die conclusion of which he called for cheers for his opponents, which .were heartily given. • Mr Watkins, the successful .candidate, is well-known ih the township, having for nuuiv years been a member of the School Committee. lie was also the Athletic Club’s first secretary. in both positions he proved himself a valued member.
