CANTERBURY’S OLIVER TWIST.

WANT DUTY ON FLOUR INCREASED CHRISTCHURCH, Last Night. A conference on wheat values was held in committee to-day between representatives of the .Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association and the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce, “for the purpose of endeavouring to assist the parties interested in arriving at a solution of the present difficulties.” Subsequently it was reported that if had been decided that a deputation be asked to go to Wellington and inter riew the Minister of Agriculture and the Minister of Industries and Commerce and urge that thy Government should give effect to the ing:--“That in order to fully protect our local industries it should be recognised as a general principle that the duty upon the manufactured article should be greater than that on the equivalent raw material used - in its manufacture, and that as the present duty on flour of £3 per ton is only on a par with the duty on wheat we are of opinion, that the duty on flour should b e increased, ami that the Government should take immediate steps to exercise such powers as may he necessary to ■prevent the dumping of flour now and at all future times.” During the conference a deputation representing the millers was received and placed before the conference the millers’ views on the matter.
