Cherry, laite of Mangaore, but now on the Public Works staff at Tahora, in'the Stratford'district, is, a visitor to Shannon.* It was decided at the Council meeting on Tuesday evening to 1 write to the Noxious .Weeds inspector, drawing his .attention. to the growth of blackberry in. the Borough., v At a meeting of the' local- branch of the Returned Soldiers' Association held on Wednesday evening, it was decided to hold, their annual re-union in the Druids' Hall on Friday evening; May 7th. A dance will,be held under the auspices of Ven. Bede's Ladies' Guild on (Tuesday evening, April 20th, at 8 p.m. in the Parish Hall. -The, Maotri Orchestra has been engaged toy supply the music and a pleasant evening's dancing is assured those'-who attend> During the past few days the local police have been making a raid on cyclists who have been committing breaches, of the Borough .by-laws, by riding their cvcles at night without a light. As a result a number of these offenders are rieing proceeded against at an early date. At a meeting of citizens held:, yesterday afternoon arrangements were made for holding a service in Shannon on Anzac Day. The service, which will take place at the Cenotaph at 10 a.m., will be conducted by the,local clergy. Should the day be we;t the service will be held m the Maoriland Theatre. The first practice of the Shannon Choral Society was held last night when nearly 40 members rolled up and putt in a very good night's practice. The very pleasing feature was that there were five new tenors and hasses and it augurs well for a very successful season. There is still room for mone basses and tenors. The annual meeting of householders for the election: of the School Committee will take place in the Schoolroom on Monday, 3rd May, at 7.30 p.m. Nominations lor seats on tile committee, which .must be ui writing close with the. chairman at 8 p.m. on Monday, 26th April. Nomination papers can he obtained lrom the chairman (Mr R. L, Tippler).
Under the new motor regulations motorists are required to obtum new number plates far their motor vcjncles within fourteen days as from April Ist. The last day for obtaining the plates was Wednesday, but a large• number of, cars were to he seen in Shannon-yesterday wu,v Hie i-.il number plates -still attached. Owi-ers will be well advised to secure their new nmmber plates immediately, also to get a renewal of their drivers' licenses, otherwise they will be. liable lo prosecution. a At the Palnierston North Hospital Board meeting held yesterday the district nurse at Mangahao camp, Mrs E. B. Prain, reported -that the medical hut had been removed from Mangahao to No. 3 dam. A number of men had been treated for minor ailments and two were sent to hospital. There had (been several severe accidents at Mangahao Camp and there had been a few cases of scarlet fever. Influenza had been prevalent, 'but the epidemic was now on the wane. The Public Works Department's medical hut was a notable improvement on the. earlier one. Including women and children there wejre now some 300 people at the camp.
The Canterbury Rugby Union has decided to advance £IOO as a loan towards the Auckland-teams tour of the South Island. On the motion of the Mayor it was decided at last meeting of the P.almerston North Borough Council to appoint inspectors to examine all cars entering the town for the purpose of ascertaining if drivers had taken out licenses, the inspection to be made within one week. To catch hold of a falling man in mid-air- must require, extraordinary strength and agility, but to do it I while standing with only one foot on a high ladder is an almost-- unbelievable feat. Yet that is .what a labourer named Thomas Leaver did at Feniscowles, near Blackburn, recently. Three plasterers were working on a scaffold round a house when the scaffolding gave way. One broke a leg and another sprained an ankle; I third was cang-ht as 1 he fell by a man | reaching out from a ladder. When the man on the latter looked at the man he had saved he found it was his own son.
