But for the astuteness of the cleaner at St. George’s Gallery, George Street, Hanover Square, an attempt to obtain possession of some famous pictures there might easily have succeeded. In the morning, when only the cleaner was at the gallery, a man called, and stated he had come from Mr. Arthur Howell, a director r of the gallery, in order to pack up some pictures for remove!, At first the man disarmed the cleaner of. any suspicions, but later, rvlien he offered her some money for assistance to pack the pictures, she refused to allow him to enter. Shortly afterwards Mr. How'cll arrived, and, on being informed of the occurrence, reported the matter to. the police, as he had never given any such instruction.
