ABUSIVE CAMBRIDGE RATEPAYERS.
THE MAYOR SPEAKS OUT. When outstanding rates were under discussion at the Cambridge Borough Council meeting on Thursday evening the Mayor said there was a phase dealing with rate collecting which he wished, to speak on and strongly too. He, together with the council, as representatives of the borough, had a duty to perform for the ratepayers as a whole. It was their duty to collect rates not only from the prompt payers but also from those who don't or won't pay. "When I came into office," said His Worship, "my policy was no favours extended and none received. During that policy I instructed the clerk and his staff to see that all rates are collected and to take necessary action. There are a few ratepayers who persistently endeavour to . evade their responsibilities. Businesslike letters have been forwarded to these people and as' a result the staff have been subjected on occasion to abusive language. The staff are only performing their duty; and I feel sure the council are behind me in saying that we will not stand that sort of thing from any ratepayer. lam going to move," continued His Worship, "that on,and after the 25th the engineer be instructed to cut off the supply of water to all ratepayers whose water rates. due to the 31st March, 1925, are in arrears; also that all general rates in arrears be sued for without further notice, unless undue hardship can be shown, such cases to be subject to arrangement with the town clerk." On being put to the meeting the motion was carried unanimously.
