SHANNON ATHLETIC CLUB'S SPORTS.

■ » • A GATHERING. Although the weather conditions on Friday evening, when heavy rain fell, did not look too promising for a fine day on Saturday, the day was ideal and the Shannon Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club's Sports meeting, for which .a large number 1 of eisiries had .been received, proved a most successful gathering. There w.as a good attendance of spectators, many of whom had journeyed from Palmerston North, Levin, and the surrounding district. Since -the last meeting the Domain has been much improved, having been tUe drained and renown in grass, while the Athletic Club through the Borough Council have recently put down a cycle track, the ,value of which was proved Iby the large number of entries received for the cycling events. Visiting cyclists, whose opinion was sought in regard to what they thought of the track, expressed themselves as being well satisfied with it, stating that when it becomes consolidated and asphalted, it would be equal to any, track in the Manawatu district. The proceedings commenced at 11.30 a.m., with the children's events, these arousing much keenness among the competitoiis. At 12.25 the adult events were started, and the committee are to he compli-

mented oil getting the events throughout the day, off to time; each race \ starting at the advertised time. In the running events the scratching pen was freely used, hut. large fields faced the starter in the cycling events. The handicapping was carried out by Mr G. Watson, of. l Levin, and was excellent, this being demonstrated in the number of close finishes. A pleasing feature was the .interest shown by the spectators in the various events, by the manner in which they applauded the winners. As usual the sawing and wood-chop-ping events aroused a lot of interest. In the 12-inch standing chop G. Watts had a runaway victory, heating R. Sands who was second and conceding him 3 seconds, iby 13 seconds. A protest was later lodged against the winner for not handing in his correct performances; this will be dealt with by (the committee during the week. Splendid performances were put up in the cycling events by C. Dunn, of Levin,, who from scratch, won the three and five mile races, and was third in \he one mile after winning his heat. He did not start in the. two mile'event. Another good performance was that of the local lad, C. Hunt, in jthe orie mile race. At the bend approaching the straight he was lying third and appeared to be beaten, but once into the straight, he made a fine sprint, overhauling, the leaders and winning amidst applause by a yard.

The,officials and committee are to be congratulated on the splendid arrangements made and the excellent day's sport provided. The secretarial duties were efficiently carried out by Mr T. Kohika, assisted by Mr A. Birchall. Mr G. Watson (Levin) despatched the fields; Mr Whyte (TokO'maru) was official time-keeper and Mr Stallard (Levin) announced with the aid of a megaphone the events and the names of the winners. A feature of the fixture was the number of side shows on the ground, these adding a touch of gaiety to the gathering, all of,which appealed to be well patronised.
