SHANNON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
FORTNIGHTLY MEETING. 'The above meeting was held in the Council Chambers on Tuesday evening. Present: The Acting-Mayor (Cr. E. Butt) and Grs. Clu,rran, Rotberts, Thwaites, Downes, Spencer, Hook and Richardson. POSTAL INCONVENIENCES The Secretary, Chamber of Commerce, wrote on behalf of that body, thanking the Borough Council far the generous support the Council have extended .to the (proposal to hold a military .camp in .Shannon. The writer also stated he had been instructed to solicit the assistance of the Council in the matter of better .mail facilities at the local post office. That this office is understaffed is admitted by the Department. In consequence, the public are deprived <ait the present time of certain services which were formerly enjoyed, i.e., the sorting of the evening mail (9 p.m.) on arrival, into private boxes; the forwarding of mails by .the 9 p.m. (train north; and an afternoon delivery |to the outlying portion of the borough. In addition to this, it is practically impossible . to get prompt attention in the office ' ait mid-day,» one man only being on duty, and he having boifch the Morse key and the counter .to attend to. The Chamlber was making representations to' the Post and .Telegraph Department through the member, Mr J. Linklater, M.P., and earnestly urge that the Gouncil will assist their effort to obtain a better >senvice.—The aotingMayor considered that the Chamber should be (backed up in this matter. The Council agreed to the request and a motion to this effect was carried. HOSPITAL BED IN LONDON. An appeal was received from the Hon. J. G. Coales, Prime Minister, for contributions for endowing beds at the University College Hospital (University of London). The letter stated that in 1933 the Rockfelier Founda < tlon made a gift of £-1,205,000 for certain .purposes connected with medicine, one of the conditions of the gift being that £400,000 should, be ex pended upon a building programme for thd provision of 180 additional beds, one to 'be named after each of the Overseas Dominions, inclusive of a new Obstetric Hospital. The position is, that whilst the full endowment of £3OOO has been raised by Australia, South Afrca and India, only £B9B has been collected for the NewZealand bed. The letter asked for the co-operation of. the Council in (bringing the appeal before the public, and if they agree, to have subscription lists opened in the Borough.—Received. SANITATION CONTRACTOR. For the position of night soil employee, 32 applications were received, five heing from local Presidents, the remainder coming from Palmerston North, Feilding and Rongqtea. After all the applications had been carefully considered' by (the Copncil, the number was reduced to four, that of Mr S. Pedersen being the final selection. GENERAL. From County Clerk, Hdrowhenua County Council, re cleaning out the drains on the Foxiton-Sliannon road, stating that at a medtlng of his Coun•cil on the 13th, Grs. Barber and the Engineer were directed to investigate the trouble. A request was received from the Shannon Amaiteur Athletic and Cycling Club, that the Borough Council erect a istyle on the (Domain fence along Vogel Street, •therehy affording the public convenience and also solving the problem of anyone climlbing over the above fence.—Left .to the Reserve Committee with power to act. Cr. Richardsodi' drew attention to surface water which comes down Stout street, flows across the railway line, and lies on Nathan Terrace. At present it has no way,of getting away and is draining into .Mr Gardner's property. He said something should ibe done to prevent the watei\ lying on the road.—The matter was referred to the Road Committee with power to act.
On the motion of Cr. Roberts it was resolved that where the turncocks along the water main are open to the public, that they, .be taken up and a loose top be put in. A request from the Shannon Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club, that a fence of posts and two wires be erected on certain portions of the cycle track on the Domain, was .granted. Cr. Spencer asked that now speed boards had Ibeem erected in, the Borough, did the Cburieifl. intend to enforce' the speed by-law. He expressed the opinion that the speed limit m Shannon was being ignored—lt was decided that the matter be left to the By-laws Committee to deal with. The resignation of the poundkeeper, Mr M. Curran, was received. Cr. Spencer reported that he had ordered an extra wheel for the grader which he thought would be an improvement. He had done so because it was necessary .-Or. Spencer's action was confirmed. The accounts were then passed fat payment.
A Whangarei telegram says Captain W li Patterson leaves there this atternoon on a cruise around New Zealand in the new launch Hakanm, the frrst stage -being -to Wellington via the East Goast. It is anticipated that six weeks will be occupied in the journey. A party of seven will he aboard. THE PLUNKET SHIELD. During the final Wellington v.
