FINE MARKSMANSHIP.

! BELT SERIES COMMENCES AT TREINTHAM. i CALDWELL AND ROOTS LEADING I PAIR. I TRENTHAM, Last Night. To-day was memorable ror the wonderfully fine weather in which to make a start with solid competition lor the Belt. Officials of the Association took fullest advantage of the favourable conditions and pushed through three matches: the Marlborough, ten shots at 300 and 600 yards, the Canterbury, ten at 600 yards and the Auckland, ten at 300 and 600 yards. This programme put. a heavy strain on (the markers, who found the long spell of watching the targets, which the greater part of the time were subjected to glaring sunshine, very trying. These forcing tactics were resented by a section of the markers, who, (to emphasise their protest, indulged in a lightning strike, which held up work on a number of targets till conciliatory influences bridged the difficulty. It was a struggle tc complete the Auckland match, as the sun had punk behind the hills before the lasi: men fired. The semi-final details had a fine, soft light, but those who drew last positions in "the sands found dusk creeping so close as to render speed equally as urgent a necessity as accuracy. The shooting throughout was of a high standard. The wind was practically harmless all day, (though some found the drift just, a little troublesome at times. During the day, Major-General Young, G.0.C., accompanied by Colonel Burgess, chief of staff, visited the range and watched the shooting for some time. Captain Ross ("Carbine Jimmy") has presented a Carbine belt Sto the Association, with a recommendation that it be awarded for competition in the service series. As a glance at the scores In the prize lists will indicate, the shooting was "hot" all day. Though possibles \ver e rare, there was much competition for the next best scores:— In the Marlborough match, Roots and Hogg notched possibles at .300 yards and J. C. Feast one at 500 yards. Anderson dropped , only one point (on his last shot) in the single range Canterbury majtah, while Caldwell got them all into the bull in the Auckland match. With three matches of the belit series gone, the leaders are:— L. Caldwell 238, Roots 238, Broughton 236, Hogg* 236, A. Harris 235, 1). J. Anderson 235, Simnionds 234, Jeune 234, E. S. King 233, J.
