OLD GOTHIC CHAPEL.
BIG RESTORATION SCHEIE. The Bishp of South wark has originated a scheme for restoring three chapels injthe retro choir or Lady Chapel of Southwark Cathedral which is one of the most perfect examples of early English architecture in London. Originally ther e were four altars in the chapel. At'present there is only one, which ranks ate |fche altar of the /parish church of St. Saviour. The new chapels ar e to be provided by the Guild oft Social Workers, the adolescents of the diocese and those who are specially interested in missionary work. The chapel, which is the oldesjt specimen of Gothic -work in London, was-erect-ed in 1206 by the Augu'stiniah canons who undoubtedly, made full use or four altars. After the dissolution the chapel was used as a place of trial, at which Bishop Gardiner,, of Winchester, Chancellor of England, presided. When Queen Elizabeth came to the throne tho court was closed, and. the 'chapel was let to a baker. For seventy years th e people of Southwark: bought their bread in the building, which is now their parish church. In the reign of Charles I. the baker.Avals evicted ,"and the building was restored, but the four altars were never, erected. '<
