COST OF TARRING. Tn reply to an enquiry the Town Clerk reported that the cost cf clearing and tarring the road a,hd footpath ibetween the Post Office and Howard Andrew, IM.'s., was, £6B. The Mayor considered it was too much. He said: "If it'was going to cost the same all over the Borough, sections would become worthless." Cr. Downes: "The Council's machinery is too primitive to do such work." The Mayor (recommended that 'before any bitumen was put on the roads the Council should agitate to the Highway Board for borouiglis to get the same .facilities as counties in respect to a grant and he strongly advised the Council not to put down a drop of tar on the road before getting the grant. Cr. - Thwaites: The work that has been done cannot be taken as any criterion as to cost. The Mayor: "Even if it cost half it would be enormous." Cr. Spencer said the Council's mothods were too crude tor them to entertain doing any tar-sealing. To carry out the -work suggested hy Cr. Thwaites at last meeting by a system of spraying, would cost approximately £l3O. He said that a spray called "Viaiet" had been used at the school and he would move that a drum be purchased for experimental work. Cr. Thwaites took exception to. Or. Spencer's statement that it was his, the speaker's, motion to have all the work done. If the two small areas moved by him, viz., around the monument and the car stand—was going to> cost £l3O it was absurd. Cr. Spencer said they were on. the wrong track and he >gave that as an illustration that .they must have a better system for doing this class of work. -i. a. n The Mayor recommended that (jr. spencer watch the result of the experiment with "Viaiet" at the school and if it was satisfactory to tang the suggestion forward again. Cr Butt said Mr Elsmore, the contractor, had offered to'put a piece down on trial, free of charge, and he moved as an amendment that this offer be accepted. On being put to the meeting the | amendment was carried.
